Triad - Bronze vs. Silver?

10585 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ifor
Hi everyone. I moved last fall and am in the process of building out my "new" home theater. In my old house I had to go the ceiling route - and have three Bronze 8 LCR in-ceiling units for the center, front left and front right and two silver 4 in-ceiling for the rear. I'm currently using a 5.1 setup with a denon 3808 receiver and a sunfire sub. (ps. 106 inch Stewart screen with firehawk material).

My dealer is suggesting that i buy the silver 4 in wall for the front and repurpose two of the inceilings i already have and move up to 7.1.

I'm not a huge audiophile. It's for sports games and family movies. the room is a semi dedicated octogonal room roughly twenty by twenty. we're doing carpet and some drapes for the three windows and for the large opening but no accoustic panels or anything.

That's gonna run me around $3k just for the three new speakers. Questions are,

1. will i really notice a difference between 5.1 and 7.1? I realize it's personal, i'm just asking the crowds opinion.

2. will in wall fronts really seem different than in ceiling (8 ft ceilings in this room).

3. in wall bronzes are a little cheaper - are silvers that much better? (probably 30% higher cost roughly).

Any other things i should be thinking about?

Thanks to all the guru's out there!

There must be enought room to be able to utilize a 7.1 setup. You can experience an improvement if you are able to follow the usual recommended placements. Look at Dolby for suggestions.

3 in-wall speakers should make an improvement as the sound is being directed at the seating area more than in-ceilings would, even the directional Triads. As long as you don't place the in-walls too high.

The Silver series will have more output if you room is bigger and has the option for different wall depths.

Hope this helps.
Ifor is, as usual, correct.

If you had asked about the difference between the Bronze and Silver LCRs six months ago, I would have told you the Silvers have about 4 dB more output and are more robust down near their low frequency cutoff. They still are, however, we redesigned the Silver LCR about two months ago, and it now is the best value in our LCR series. We upgraded the crossover, and the Silver LCR now has the same tweeter as the $2,150 InWall Gold/6 LCR and $2,250 InWall Silver/4 Monitor. It's a premium Seas tweeter with startling articulation and detail, and it changes the Silver LCR. (Older Silver LCRs cannot be upgraded, in case anyone is wondering.)

Your dealer seems to be advising you correctly.
ok, I took the plunge and ordered the Triad in-wall Silver's. The dealer came out this week to cut the holes in the wall..... wow, i didn't realize how big these suckers are.

We should have them installed in the next week or two and I'll post results and some pictures.
