Tried to create "jump to" points w/ Panny EH50 using "chapters" function

535 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  youppi
I just transferred a vhs concert tape to the harddrive and it came out great! I'm currently fixing to get it the way I want before transferring it to dvd. I wanted to create "jump points" on the dvd so you can skip to certain songs, so I created chapters. I thought this was the correct way to achieve this, but now I think this was a mistake. When you watch a chapter, it only plays up until it reaches the next chapter point and then it starts over at the beginning of the chapter again. My intention was to be able to jump to one of the designated points in the disc and then continue to watch the disc all the way through if you wish. Is there a way to do this?

Is there a way for me to now remove the chapter points I've created without losing the whole title?

Thanks!

I have no idea why your chapter points are working like you describe. Mine work like you thought yours should work. You must be doing something wrong but I can't figure out what it is.

My E100 probably works different than your EH50 but the process of erasing chapter points must be described in your manual. On my E100, have the HHD selected (not the burner). I press the DISPLAY button on the remote. Then I press the DOWN ARROW to move the yellow highlight down one notch to highlight PLAY. There you should see all the chapter markers that you have placed on your entire HHD. If you have only placed them on the one program then you don't have to locate the ones you want to erase. If you have some that you don't want to erase then you have to highlight one of them and press ENTER and see where that marker takes you. By doing that a few times you can locate the markers you want to erase. Highlight the lowest numbered marker and then press the CANCEL button on the remote which erases that chapter marker. If you have a lot of markers, it doesn't look like you did anything BUT YOU DID. Say you want to erase 6 markers, highlight the lowest numbered one and then press the CANCEL button 6 times.

That's how my E100 works. I hope Panasonic does it the same way on the EH50.

Did you accidentally turn on Repeat Play - Chapter ?

Sounds like that might be the problem. Funny, I've never bothered using it. I have the E85, and in order to access it you must press the Display button, which is located in a row of buttons under the arrow buttons, and scroll to play, then arrow over to select Repeat play and then choose OFF. .

As for removing a chapter you don't want, with the E85

In Direct Navigator, highlight the show you want

Press Sub menu

Scroll to CHAPTER

That show's chapter screen loads

Go to the chapter you don't want

Then press Sub menu

Scroll down to COMBINE CHAPTERS

The chapter you picked will appear along with the chapter after it (example, you select chapter 4, it's thumbnail is shown followed by the thumbnail for ch 5)

You will b asked whether you want to combine these 2 chapters.

Select YES.

Both are then combined, and yoiu are returned to the chapter screen.

Each Panny model, for some odd reason, had some of their terms tweaked by the geniuses at the company, so the words used to describe the same functions may be slightly different on your E50.

What Youppi describes sounds like playing a Playlist from Chapter view. Did you play it from the Direct Navigator? How do you play a "chapter"? You play the entire title, then the SKIP skips to the next marker/chapter/skip-to point. I have only E100 and E85 experience, and yes, you can get rid of the chapter markers as decribed above, but I wouldn't rush into erasing them just yet; first find out why it's not playing the way you (and I) would expect it to.

I think if you select a chapter (highlight and press ENTER) in the Playlist, it continues thru the rest of the way. In the chapter view, they repeat there.
Yes, you are correct. I am looking at the "chapter" view when this repetition occurs, but I can't select a chapter in the Playlist as you suggest, b/c there is nothing in the Playlist when I go there. It's empty...and the first playlist view is hi-lighted and says "create". Do I need to create a playlist here in order to view my previously created chapters the way I want? I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with this manual. Thank God for this forum and its members.

I'm confused....Then you are working with Direct Navigator or whatever.. Repetition is normal for the CHAPTER VIEW screen as you highlight each one. But the chapters shouldn't repeat on normal playback. (Press ENTER from Direct Navigator screen, or selecting a chapter "Press ENTER" in CHAPTER VIEW). When you CREATE CHAPTER, does the whole thing play thru?

Playlists won't solve your problem. But they are the safe way to edit/chapters. If you make a mistake, you can delete it and start over, without losing the source. Pg 40 of the manual..

Ok, I feel a bit silly now. I did exactly what you said below and the chapters work perfectly. I can jump from one to another and play through them if I wish. My problem was expecting them to react the same way in chapter view mode (I'm not sure why I was thinking this way). Anyway, thanks!
