Drywall just went up in the basement and I need to start the finish work and thought I'd tackle the soffits first. The soffits go all around and are 8" deep (from the ceiling) and plan on putting rope lighting. What size crown molding do you think would work best and still have the proportions look good? I'm also thinking of finishing the face of the soffits with wood to look like raised panels-is this worth doing or should I just paint it? Thanks for the advice

I'd advise you to spend some time looking at photos of what other people did. Whether to paint or to do stuff in wood isn't a performance question is is really a matter of what you personally like.
