Troubleshooting Onkyo HT-S5200 HTiB

Hello and thank you for your time,

I just bought the HT-S5200 home theater system and the sound is great in my apartment. However, every so often (and not necessarily in loud or intense moments in DVDs) the sound from the 7.1 system shorts out, only for a second or less and then it's back to normal. I rewind the movie and listen again and now this portion of the movie works fine.

Sometimes movies do it very little, while other times the same movies will skip often or other dvds will do it regularly throughout the movie. The dvd player (Oppo brand) has never been an issue and has never skipped or shorted out before the 7.1 system hookup. My DVDs are for the most part brand new as well.

I realize that this could be caused by many different things, but my instruction manual doesn't really leave any feedback regarding troubleshooting this issue.

Hopefully I can find a problem (I've already checked for secure cable connections and for faulty cables themselves) before deciding that something major like the receiver is at fault.

Thanks for reading and hopefully someone can help me rid this issue.

If you have another DVD player or playstation 2 or something avaible you should try playing a movie and see if it does it. I know you said you havnt had any problems with your dvd player, but hey its never hurts to trouble shoot and give it a try, otherwise you will be scratching you head forever, and you can check it off your list of "hey ive tried that a;ready".

Also are you using analog (red white) stereo cables, or a Optical cable?
Yes I have not tried the dvd player recently without the receiver and speakers so I can give that a try.

Yes, I am using (red white) cables but only for output on the tv to the receiver for input cable/satellite audio. This was only to to get sound working for the speakers when I'm watching regular tv (not HD cable because I don't have it). But the issue is when I watch movies; I haven't noticed it watching regular television.

I have an HDMI cable from the receiver to the tv, and also an HDMI cable from the dvd player to the receiver.

Oh also I wrote to Onkyo and their support told me to factory reset the receiver, which isn't a big deal because I've made really no changes other than calibrating the acustics to the room. So I can do that, but I don't think that's the problem.
Oh and I am using a coaxial cable for my dvd sound.
Just in case anyone has a similar problem.

I believe that I have remedied the problem by purchasing an optical audio cable. Since installing it the sound has not cut out in any of my movies. I think it had to do with EMI from all of the electronics I have in such close proximity.

Optical is not affected by EMI I'm told, because it's light and no metal wiring.
