ive got a lg tv which plays mkvs fine from a usb hardrive but wont support truehd,now if thats the only track for english on it can i convert it down to ac3,thanks for any advice

Go back to the source from which the content was copied and extract the companion DD track instead of the TrueHD track. It'll also save space on the drive.

All (original) TrueHD tracks come with an AC3 track embedded. However, if you are using .mkv container it does not support the ability to embed both TrueHD and AC3 in a single track. Either switch to a different format (like .m2ts) or manually strip the AC3 track and add it as a second, separate audio track in your .mkv file.


Now if you are just trying to get AC3 from an illegal .mkv that you downloaded and all you have is the stripped TrueHD track, you're probably SOL. Although you could look to see if EAC3TO will actually decode the TrueHD and re-encode it to AC3.
