Hi everyone. I'm currently thinking of trying to get a sound system set up. It's a "great" room so it's a living room/dining room open onto the kitchen. Measured it's about 25'x16'x9'.

So this is currently what I'm thinking, and I'd love some feedback, suggestions on upgrades or ways to make it cheaper.

An Onkyo 607 receiver

2xPolk C50s for right and left speakers

2xPolk 30s as surround sound speakers

Polk CS2 for the center

and an HSU-STF2 sub

I know it's a large room, and I was wondering if this would work, if the sub works with the speakers, what things I could change to make better/cheaper. All told including tax and shipping I figure this will come in somewhere close to $1300, with the receiver and sub being the most expensive components.

Thanks for your advice!

one HSU STF2 now, and a second one later when the budget cools off. 2 subs actually can work better in a large room than one huge sub.

What is a Polk C50 ? Do you mean Monitor 50 tower ?

I like the idea of picking up another sub maybe in 6 months or so. Sorry, I did mean the Monitor 50 tower.

How do you think that would work as a system, and is it a good deal for the budget?

thanks for the responses.

for a few bucks each extra, you might consider the Monitor 60 towers - more cone area to move more air !

I thought about that. Would they make a discernable difference? I also thought of downgrading the receiver to a HT-RC160 to save a few bucks. Is that a bad idea?

50 vs. 60 discernable difference ? maybe, maybe not. You are adding another 5.25" active driver to each enclosure....if it were my large open room, I would go with the Monitor 60's (actually I'd wait for another Newegg sale on the Monitor 70's
) and not go less than the Onkyo SR507 for the receiver. One time investment - but years of use, so don't make too many compromises at the beginning.

I have A/B tested the TSi300 (M50) to the TSi400 (M60) and the biggest difference is in the lower frequencies. It is a huge difference. The 300s sound fairly "light" with not much down low. Turn on the 400s and wow! They have some meat to them. Yes, that extra driver makes a difference. If you are using a sub however, it might not be worth the extra money if you are going to have them crossed over anyway.
