As you may have seen elsewhere...

The first motherboard with a tube output stage is here from AOpen. It's a P4 motherboard and this sucker looks pretty slick! Some of the features include Reliable MultiCaps and Cardas connecting wire. Retail price of $215.

This link is a little slow right now, but here's the press release:

Here's a large pic of the board (quick link):

Here's some specs from AOpen's US site:

Yep, I just saw it over at Slashdot. I think it's great. It seems that convergence is on more than just Microsoft's mind these days.

OK, it's a slick novelty, but what is the practical use? Isn't the inside of a computer case supposed to be quite electrically noisy? And it sacrafices expansion slots as well. Wouldn't it be better to get a good digital out card and have the DAC and tube amp placed externally?

My thought too Jeff. I am looking at the pending and existing 24/192 soundcards for use as a preamp stage, but I definitely don't want the amplification stage in there. Ideally, I could afford digital from the PC to individual DACs and monoblocks at the speakers. Anyway, some may prefer the convenience of this configuration.

You are correct. This is simply a preamp stage.

I find the idea rather nifty! I might have to upgrade sooner than I thought I would...

I like tubes ... I own two tube preamps and two tube power amps. But there is no way I'd want this motherboard. Someone has already mentioned the noise that is typically found down close to most motherboards. And then there is all of that extra heat being generated inside of your case by the tube.

I'd rather have the digital out, or even a low voltage line out into a tube preamp, than this arrangement.

Some of the more cynical slashdot posters think that this exceedingly silly gimmick will make a big splash in the "audiophile" world. They may be right....

Some of the even _more_ cynical slashdot posters think that this is a clever put-on. They may be right....

And then somebody joked about the latest memory system: the LP-ROM.

And it turned out that it _exists_, at least as far back as the C-64 days.

My friend is right. There is no such word as "gullible" in the dictionary...
