And I mean a real, real newbie. My friend left me his turntable when he moved out. He hadn't had it hooked up in all the time I lived there, though he swears it works. Now I'm sitting down to put it together and I'm totally lost. I looked on the internet for help but everyone seems to already know something about what they're doing, and I know literally nothing. They're talking about turner arms and skiing and all kinds of terms.

I know what the arm is, and I know what the needle is. I mean, this is dire. I can puzzle some parts out, but the technology is so before my time I can't tell if it's even working. To start with, hooking the turntable up to the sound control...box thing (I'm sorry, I really am) was OK because the wires had proper heads on them, color coded and everything. But the control box just has trailing wires to hook up to the speakers. Is it OK if there are no plugs on them? Are the wires broken or do I just twizzle them up and stick them into the back of the speakers (like I had to do that one time when my CD player broke and one of the speakers disconnected)? And, if twizzling, how do I do that properly? Do I need tape?

If this confuses you, or you don't know what I'm asking, it's OK because I'm confused too. Perhaps another way to do this would be to imagine that I'm five and you're teaching me about vinyl. Just start at the very beginning and don't use technical terms and I'll answer your questions as best as I can. Please and Thank You.

Ok, let's get started. The Sherwood is a receiver, which is the heart of most audio systems. Assuming it's got an input on the back labeled "phono," it's all you need. Plug the turntable in there.

The Pioneer looks like just a CD player. You can connect it to the receiver (any of the inputs except "phono") with one of the RCA cables. There is surely a toggle switch on the Sherwood which will allow you to switch from the CD player to the turntable to the tuner (which is part of the receiver).

The speaker wires look normal. You just strip the ends and connect to the receiver and the speakers.

IOW, everything is normal. Hook it up and see what happens.
