Having started a collection...well, 40 records so far, so not much of a collection, yet....I really enjoy the sound of vinyl.

Likewise, I read all over the 'Net about manual vs. automatic, direct vs. belt drive, etc.

Things to keep in mind:

-This will be my first non-integrated, standalone turntable

-Being my first turntable, I never plan on doing any cartridge upgrades, or any upgrading whatsoever for that matter

-I really like the convenience of selecting 33/45, size, and hitting a button, and having auto-return

Down the road, may I get a manual TT? Sure. However, unless you can talk me out of it otherwise, an automatic is the path I think I'm going; I believe for a first TT, it's the best route.

Note:

Accompanying gear will be (tentatively):

B&W 686

Marantz PM6005 -or- Emotiva USP-1 Pre & UPA-200

Any input greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Well, since I started with a Dual automatic as my first "good" record player (had some real POSs when I was growing up but with my first good job in high school got that Dual). I went pure later. I don't see anything wrong with starting with the automatic. The mechanism may introduce audible noise, though, it's not pure! I now use a direct drive tt (Technics SL1200mkII) for the last 30 years or so, though, rock solid reliable and little to go wrong. The Dual after a few years IIRC started acting up and performing its functions erratically! Plus it was a belt drive so it had to go anyways!
Start with a good cartridge and take care of it and you shouldn't need to upgrade in any case with whatever table you decide on.

I do kinda wish sometimes that I had at least an automatic lift/turn off at the end of a disc, but I just try not to let it run out very long....

There's nothing terribly wrong with choosing an automatic. The most important thing is to get one with a cartridge good enough that it won't wear out your vinyl collection. Which table(s) did you have in mind?

But this:

Is a poor choice. Speakers are far more important to your system's sound quality than amplification. Your should be devoting more of your budget to them.

Agreed.

Also, the reasoning you will see on audiophile forums for manual turntables is that they produce less noise. This is complete crap. You would have to have a very cheap and/or poorly designed table for this to be an issue.

Thoughts on the Marantz TT42?
Not a great cartridge, and it's not upgradable.

Turntable: Why I shouldn't get an automatic?

Because they always break down. Always. Mine did anyways. Moving parts and all that.

Technics 1210 Mk2 : 23 years and counting. Maybe autos have got better?

Yeah. Right.

I had one for about 15 years, never had a problem with the return mechanism.

If you want an automatic, get an automatic.  There is nothing inherently wrong with an automatic, though it will likely cost you more for equal quality.  Just don't get a changer.

If you want low maintenance, get direct drive.  If you can't be bothered to raise and lower a tonearm, you probably don't want to have to replace a belt.
