TV Bluetooth remote controls

469 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Carlos Martinez
This is my first TV with a bluetooth remote control and I am having some problems with it. The TV is still under warranty.

As the assistance is refusing just to send me a new remote control, and is asking me to take the TV along with the RC to them (a 50" big box, which may be damaged on the car), I'm studying other possibilities.

1) Finding a universal BT remote control, which doesn't need a receiver unit. It will just pair with the TV and take control over. Would that work? Are they really "universal"?

2) Is it possible to use a cell phone as remote control, perhaps using some program I do not know of that I can download somewhere?

You didn't post any model numbers but many TV brands have apps that you can use to control the TV.
Probably get better answers in the Remotes forum:
How much would it cost to buy a replacement remote through their service parts? Not ideal, but possibly an option.

I got in contact with the manufacturer, and the problem is that you do have to use top charge batteries with it, alkaline minimum.
There's a setup that you can use, but first you should do something I didn't understand was adamant: you have to pair the remote to the TV. Something I never had to do with any of my BT remotes on my TV boxes before, like on my Nvidia Shield TV.
After you pair it, you can enter the BT menu and look for the remote. Then you can see how much capacity is still on the battery. It has to be more than 80%, which is absolutely ridiculous for something that uses AAA batteries. It's a poor design. With that demand, they should have designed it for AA batteries at least. They sacrificed reliability for size.
The batteries the remote came with were not alkalines. When I inserted alkalines things came to life again.
A friend recommended me to use ENERGIZER AAA ULTIMATE LITHIUM L92, which I already ordered.
But I'm thinking of modifying the remote to use the most compact a dual AA external box I may find.
I'm not sure I made the right choice when I picked this TV, but I already had a Semp TV on my living room, that has an infrared remote, so I thought I was buying something similar.
This friend of mine thinks it's a poor choice to use BT for a TV remote, and I tend to agree.

Yes the Energizer Lithium AAA's have a lot more capacity than the alkalines and have a little higher voltage too.
I just switched to them from regular alkalines in my Sony backlit bluetooth remote that drains batteries faster than a non-backlit remote.
Another alternative would be high capacity NiMH rechargeable AAAs, cheaper in the long run since you can reuse them over 500 times.

Would the NIMHs hich capacity work fine with the remote? After all they are all 1.2v.

Yes they appear to.
The remote was still working when a set of alkaline batteries had gotten down to just over 1.0V,
so a steady 1.2 to 1.3V with NiMH should be fine.
The unit is badly designed. Should have been made for AA batteries, because it's circuit drains a lot. I have other BT remote using AA and they do not drain as much.
A battery with 1.4v showed as below 80% on the TV remote setup. But I will try with Nimhs I have and see what happens.
