I recently just ordered some speakers and a sub with a Denon 1613. I frequently watch movies on my tv plugging in a USB flash drive to the tv. If I did that with the new Denon setup, would I not get sounds through my AVR and new speakers?

Your TV should have a digital output, usually Toslink. Run this to your receiver, and you should have sound from your TV! I may well only be 2-channel PCM, but you can just use something like DPL II in your reciever to synthesize surround sound.

You would be much better off if you just connect the HDMI out (or component-video out) on the receiver to the TV and feed all of your inputs and sources directly into the receiver.

The Toslink optical link is a very old inferior protocol with limited performance capabilities. Your TV probably only puts out 2-channel audio on that link anyway.

The 1613 has a USB input port on the front to accept your flash drive.

The Denon can only play audio via its USB port. Your best bet (only?) is via HDMI ARC, if your TV supports it. Most HDMI 1.4 devices do.

Not only. The TV's optical output works, too.

That depends. Most displays will only decode 5.1 from their tuner input, anything else is 2.0 PCM. I have no experience with USB input, maybe you speak from experience.

I was simply pointing out that HDMI ARC is not the only way to get audio from the TV to the AVR. Nor is it necessarily the best. In most cases, the optical and ARC outputs are identical, although with a few TVs, optical supports 5.1 at times when ARC does not. Optical is also not subject to the same oddities that can plague ARC due to the way HDMI CEC works (or doesn't work).

I am not saying either interface supports 5.1 when the source is the TV's USB input. I don't know one way or another.

I only have a 2.1 setup. Would there also be sound to the sub doing digital output to receiver?
If the speakers are set to SMALL in the AVR, there will be as, at the least, rerouted bass from the front channels will be sent to the subwoofer. But be aware that, depending upon whether or not your TV can pass 5.1 via its digital output, and whether or not the input source material is 5.1 to begin with, you may be dropping the LFE channel (the ".1" of 5.1), altogether. If the TV only passes a 2 channel downmix, the LFE channel will be dropped from 5.1 material. If the input source material is only 2.0 to begin with, this would not be a concern.
