Hi,

I am thinking about buying the Sony KDF60XS955.

I plan to buy the Geforce 6800 Ultra video card.

I am a hardcore gamer and would love to play PC Games & Xbox on my new tv. I do not know what is recommended/required to connect a PC to a TV.

According to the TV specs:

Dual Component Video Inputs

HDMI Interface

According to the Graphics Card Specs:

Dual Single-Link DVI Support

What kind of cables do I need and where do the connections go? There is no VGA adapter on this TV. I am looking for the highest quality display output. What is the recommended resolution for the PC? It is a highend PC capable of high resolution display.

Have I made a good choice with the TV I have selected? After hours at a retail store I thought this would be the best choice. Connecting my PC to the TV and playing Everquest2, Half-life2 and Halo2 on xbox is the most important. I welcome all feedback and if there is a better solution please let me know.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Welcome to AFS Forum!

I suggest that you try posting your question on the HTPC forum. You are likely to find folks there who are more knowledgeable about the TV/PC interaction and xbox games as well.

Good luck.

You don't give the specs of the TV so here are some questions?

Does the TV support DVI input if so then you should use a DVI-D cable and use that for video interface.

What kind of TV is it(CRT, LCD, DLP)? What resolutions will it accept over DVI?

You want to set the PC resolution to the native resolution of the TV if it is pixel based, for example 1280x720 @60Hz for a piwel based tV with a native resolution of 1280x720.

If it is LCD or LCD projection than make sure the response time of the LCD is 16ms or less since you wantto use it to play games.

A PC is capable of much higher resolutions than almost all HDTVs

Sony KDF60XS955:

• Inputs and Outputs

• Component Video (Y/Pb/Pr) Inputs: 2 Rear (1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i)

• Composite Inputs: 1 Front/ 3 Rear

• S Video Inputs: 1 Front/ 3 Rear

• Audio Input: 1 Front/ 6 Rear

• Control S (IN/OUT): 1 Rear

• Subwoofer Out: 1 Rear

• HDMI with Analog Audio In: 2

• CableCARD™ Slot: 1 Rear

The TV is an LCD projection. 16:9 aspect ratio and 3.28 million dots of resolution.

It doesn't say it supports DVI. The salesperson I talked to said component video would work. I can't find data on the response time.

Ok..

I don't think that TV is going to be an option since it does not have an VGA input or DVI.

I found a samsung 61" HDTV ready RPTV with a DVI Input and VGA. What is better? Does it depend on the application? Gaming use VGA and DVD use DVI?

Specs:

Texas Instruments HD3 DLP chip (1280 x 720 pixels)

1 rear-panel DVI digital video input with HDCP copy protection

rear-panel PC input: analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin)

Can't find the response time.

MAN!!! I found the perfect LCD TV for gaming but it is only 46". My girlfriend will not allow me to buy it. She wants 60" or more.

Samsung LT-P468W 46" HDTV-ready LCD TV with 1920 x 1080 resolution

46" flat TFT LCD panel

1920 x 1080 pixels

ultra-fast pixel response time (12 milliseconds)

1 rear-panel DVI digital video input with HDCP copy protection

1 rear-panel HDMI digital audio/video input with HDCP copy protection

PC input: analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin)

I wish they made that in 60"!

Response time is only a problem with LCD or LCD projection TVs. It is not an issue with DLP projection systems which is why it is not listed with the Samsung DLP system. I have the same model Samsung DLP system, however, with a 46 " screen and have used both the VGA and the DVI connection with a DVI-D cable. I like the DVI PQ better.

HI Walford,

Thank you very much for your replies. Very informative.

1. Do you know if there is a newer model due out soon to replace the Samsung HL-P6163W?

2. You mentioned running the PC at the native resolution of the TV. The samsung has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. So you don't recommend running the PC at a lower resolution? Some games I play may not always run at optimum performance with that resolution.

and lastly..

3. Monetary issues aside, would you choose the 46" TFT LCD or the 61" RPTV for gaming (xbox, ps2 & PC), HDTV Cable and DVDs.

The TV has HDMI which is a connector that includes a DVI compliant video stream as well as uncompressed digital audio. There are numerous DVI -> HDMI cables.

Thanks. I was just about to post that. Is there a quality degradation going from the HDMI to the DVI?

Are the PC video Card manufacturers going to change over to HDMI?

I don't feel like waiting for the new XBR series. I heard they won't be out until probably next spring.

From what I have heard, the XS is really nice but it is not better then the XBR. It is a lot cheaper. Maybe I'll get the XS for now and once the new XBR comes out get that.

Thanks,

1. There are some new Samsung models coming and there are several threads that discuss them so I won't try to cover that area.

2.If your PC video card can't run games at 1280x720 @60Hz I suggest you get a new video card. But I am not a gamer and I thought that the newer games liked to use a highrer resolution such as 1920x1080.

3. I have no need for a flat panel display since my system sits in a corner and I need room underneath it for set top boxes anyway. Also I am concerned about burn in problems with LCD displays.

As I understand it HDMI is a superset of DVI. There *should* be a no loss of quality.

I don't have a GW so I'm afraid I can't be of much more assistance with the specific TV issues.
