Just picked up one of the first units the same day they arrived at Digital Connection. I am local, so just drove there and bought one of the first TVIX HD M-4000 out of just opened shipping container.


Spent the next couple of days setting it up, upgrading to the latest firmware, installing an internal Seagate 500GB drive and playing with it. The unit is excellent and I think it will do everything I need.


A couple of questions for the gurus with experience on this unit:


1. I setup the FTP connection to the unit across the home LAN. Is this the only way to communicate with it (copy files to/from the unit)? Can it be configured as a NAS without running the FTP? So far, I am not able to configure it for LAN access without FTP.


2. I need to stream content from a network drive (Maxtor NAS storage drive). I am having trouble getting this functionality to work. I enter the IP address into the "Network Disk1", but there is no place to enter user id and password for the drive on the HD4000. It fails to connect no matter what I try. I don't want to install NetShare as my computers will be turned off and only the NAS drive running. Anyone able to get this to work? If so, please help with specific instructions.


3. Is there a way to setup playlists for the music?


4. I added a USB card reader (SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1 reader/writer), but I am unable to read my SD and CF cards on the unit from my digital cameras. What are the compatible USB card readers that work with this unit?

Any brave the move to FW v2.0.5?


My M-4000 came loaded with 1.9.8A. Looked on TViX site and do not see a 1.9.8A version, I see v1.9.5 then jumps to v2.0.5. Sort of afraid to do the upgrade with no way of getting back to the factory installed FW

No worries.

Just switch forth and back between those FWs as you desire. I've used them all and switched forth and back, since they all have different bugs...

1.9.8A was a beta. (Strange that they delivered the unit with that!)


If you really, really want 1.9.8A back I', sure you can get it from Tvix or maybe by some nice user of this forum....

First , I agree with Kei: scan through the Tvix 5000 thread. It is huge and contains a lot of answers.


1. You can use USB or FTP to write to and read from the internal disk. Nothing else.

The Tvix can read SMB or NFS network shares.


2. You don't mention which Maxtor. If you plan to run SMB you must create the same account that is used for NetShare. (guest?) see the Tvix faq.

I use NFS from my Maxtor Shared Storage+.

It's really simple.

- go to http://openmss.org and download and install the open source firmware.

- telnet to the MSS and start NFS.

Enter these commands:

portmap

rpc.mountd

rpc.nfsd

exportfs -io r,no_root_squash your.tvix.ip.adress/netmask:/shares/mss-hdd/your-share-name

(netmask is typically 24 on a small standard configured home network).


Then in the Tvix enter the MSS IP and the same path /shares/....

but without the first /


If you have an MSS II and wants NFS, surf to the same site and.....wait.

I don't beleive htat they have manages NFS on MSSII yet.


3. Yes, just create them in Winamp or a texteditor.

I had problems getting the tvix 4000 to find my Infrant NV+ but I solved them as follows.


Set tvix unit to use NFS (be sure this is supported by your NAS)

Enter ip address of NAS and name in format /share

Make user 'DVICO' with blank password on your NAS and grant access to the media files


Now I am dealing with MAJOR stuttering when playing ISO and VOB files off my NAS. It plays audio and mpg2 files fine, and I had a DSM520 for a while which played the VOB files fine, so I dont think it is the network or NAS. Hope to troubleshoot it today. Plan to try playing from USB and internal HD.

Finally got my Maxtor NAS to work. I created a "public access" share on the NAS called "tvixhd1" with no password and no username. On the M4000 I used the network setup and entered the IP address for "network disk1" and selected SAMBA. That's all it took to connect. NFS does not work, probably my NAS does not support NFS. Wish I could get the NFS to work, as it should provide faster transfer rates.


I have a home lan with NAS connected to a wired Linksys router in the upstairs home office and M4000 is downstairs with HT setup. It is connected to a Linksys wireless bridge, which provides connectivity to my home LAN. This is a wireless-G network.


Streaming from NAS - photos and mp3s work fine. The problem is with streaming video (SD in MPG format from my SD camcorder). When I stream from NAS the video and audio breaks and stutters continuously. My wireless connection is close to 50Mbps, so it should have more than enough bandwidth for standard def. video. I do have an HD camcorder, but I am not even going to try streaming HD video until the issue with SD video is resolved.


Any of you guys having the same issues? Looking for solutions to the video over LAN issue...

Try a WIRED ethernet line and all your video playback problems should disappear.

Wireless just doesn not cut it yet with video (especially HDTV material). Get past the wireless marketing puffery about bandwidth and you start to see the true bandwidth of these standards which suffer from large percentages of overhead and inconsistent performance. Wired ethernet doesnt have these problems. I can tell you I have been able to 2 different high bitrate HD ts's to 2 5000's in different rooms, while also repair par'ing from the workstation and also downloading at 6 MBps all to the same NAS over wired ethernet without a single hiccup, stutter, pause, or dropped frames on either of the 5000"s.

Read the other threads. There is consistent complaints that the 4000P doesn't perform over a wired connection. There are reports that it is only connecting at 10Mbps, which doesn't have the bandwidth for even high bitrate SD streams. It is possible that the hardware is more different than we were led to believe. Several of us have put in questions to Dvico for an answer.

The wired connection is just not feasable in my house. I am not about to re-wire the house (upstairs and downstairs) to try to resolve this issue. Furthermore, my Roku HD1000 streams SD video just fine over the same wireless connection. There must be an issue with TVIX 4000 as some of the others have mentioned, perhaps it really does connect at only 10Mbps. If true, this is a major show stopper for many of us...

Got the NFS to work on my Maxtor NAS with your method, thanks! But now the video streaming only works for couple of seconds, then stops completely. When connected with SAMBA streaming continues, but with stuttering. Not sure where to go from here, perhaps we need to wait for the firmware fix per other threads to resolve the slow LAN connection on M4000...

I can confirm a 10Mbit, half duplex connection with my unit.


It is amazing any video will play over that connection.
