two day old 34xbr960 - PLEASE HELP

I was going to add this to the official 34xbr960 thread but it was so big, I didn't know if people would read it.

I just got a 34xbr960 and have a few issues that I would really appreciate help with.

1. I had to adjust the tilt and vertical center (+1/+1). Did other people have to do this? My last tv was an old 36xbr400 and I never had a problem like that.

2. When I switch to either hdmi (dvd) or component (ps2) inputs and the unit on the other end is off, then I see a VERY distinct vertical white line about 5" from the left. It seems to go away when I switch on whatever it is that is attached, but does anybody else have this?

3. When I put my ps2 in 16:9 mode, the image comes out compressed. I have to switch it to full mode on the tv and it terrible because of the fact that it doesn't fill the screen. It leaves like a 1/8" border on the left and 1/4" border on the right that is all fuzzy. Does anybody else have this? Should I try to get into the service menu to fix this?

4. I read some mentions about an offcenter issue with the component inputs but I couldn't find a description of the exact problem. Could somebody please tell me? Is this the issue I am experiencing with the ps2?

5. I am thinking about getting it ISF calibrated? Does anybody on here live in the Las Vegas area that can recommend somebody?

I know that this is a lot, especially from a first time poster on here (and I admit that I didn't read all 99 pages of the 34xbr960 post) but I did try searching and couldn't find answers. Please help.

Are you saying that the "black bars" on your TV are "thicker" than normal? If it's what I think it is, the settings your PS2 are on (and I don't even know if the PS2 is capable of this) make the player think it's sending video to a 4:3 set instead of a 16:9. I'd fully recommend getting a stand-alone DVD player, as a TV such as the XBR deserves it.

I have a dvd player, the Sony DVP-NS90V. It is hooked up through HDMI. Other than the strange white line when it is turned off, that is working ok.

The problem with the ps2 is that I set it to 16:9 and instead of displaying it as 16:9, the tv displays it as a compressed 4:3 image. If I change the tv from normal to full then the image looks normal and is 16:9 except for the fuzzy edges on the left and right and being off center.

BTW, for the white line, I did some more checking and it is right at the left border of where 4:3 gets displayed. I would worry that it is some kind of burn-in (even though that is not supposed to happen to crt's) except that it doesn't show up on the analog inputs.

Sorry for the misread on the PS2, I thought it was your DVD player.

This is one thing I can be sure of, is that CRT's can most definately burn in, but realistically it won't. As far as this particular symptom goes, it doesn't sound like burn in.

yeah thats normal it depends on the direction you face the TV

probably have one on the right too, it sounds like you do not have the brightness set perfectly so, you are seeing where the "normal" aspect ratio would normally be inputted

if you adjust the brightness until, the black is uniform it should disappear, although depending on the source on that input, it maybe too dark

sounds like autodetection for 16:9 content is not being detected, fault would be the PS2, normally it would just switch to 16:9 full mode for you

as far as the underscan issue, I would not adjust this, again this is the fault of your PS2

you can verify this with a DVD calibration disc using the overscan test pattern, the TV should be about 5%

if you are going to get it professionally calibrated, I would just stop worrying, they should adjust and center everything for you

Just a guess but more people are likely to see and read your post in the "official" thread since people tend to subscribe to those.

1. yes

2. yes

3. don't know

4. don't know

5. check the ISF website, then go to the Local HDTV Info and Reception forum for Las Vegas and ask for recommendations. Also in the Display Calibration forum there is a list of calibators.

3.) Yes, you're supposed to leave the TV in Full Mode for games. Make sure the PS2 is set to 16:9 and you are using component video. Also make sure to check each game's option menus, as some of them have WS settings and even pro scan settings.

4.) Never heard of it. If you are still having problems, it might an overscan issue of some sort, in which case, you can either try and brave it in the service menu yourself or call in a tech.
Here is another thing to add to the list...

6. When I watch tv in 4:3 in normal mode (with the black bars on the sides), I get what looks like a white fuzzy line on the left side of the image. Is this underscan that can this be fixed through the service menu or is it something else?
probably the source is the cause of the fuzzy line
4. this is player specific issue, the Sony DVP-NS70 & DVP-NS90 image is off center when viewed.

Does this mean you also have the whie line problem? Do you know how to fix it? I have the same problem in video 5 on the left side where a 4:3 image would be cut off. This is only present when the device hooked up to video 5 is off. I believe this is the same problem as the fuzzy white line while watching 4:3 shows on tv since they are both in th same place.

As for the PS2..to fix the problem first make sure it's set to 16:9 in the configuration menu then play a dvd then press "STOP" then go under DVD settup and it will say aspect ratio is set to 4:3. change this to 16:9 then play the movie!!

There you go problem solved!!!
