So I was watching MSG today (local RSN), and they had a promo for how the new home for Champions League matches in the area would be on MSG+ (another local RSN) starting on August 18th. I looked in my guide, and on the 20th, there's one game that is listed as being in HD. Of course, right now it's still TBA for the teams in the guide, but for the first few games when the playoffs start, that is the only one that is listed as HD (it is a replay from what i know).

Are we looking at seeing some champions league matches in HD?

And also, is it rare to see a local RSN broadcasting UEFA champions league matches live?

This year the games seem to be split between Fox Soccer, Setanta and RSN's. The RSN's will have one game a week which should be in HD.

FoxSports affiliate RSN feeds will be available in HD. FSC is planning on launching an HD channel in time for their games in February (aiming for Jan 2010), but your provider will have to offer it. The Championship game on FX will be in HD.

Here's the MSG+ (RSN) preliminary schedule for the entire tournament (note that some of the tape delay games are shown live on either FSC or Fox Sports en Espanol):
http://www.msg.com/msg-plus/uefa-cha...-schedule.html

Also, here's a full list of August's games:
http://www.championsleaguetalk.com/f...v-schedule/479

All games kick off at 2:45pm ET

August 18

FC Sheriff v Olympiakos, Fox Soccer Channel

Celtic v Arsenal, FSN

Timisoara v Stuttgart, Fox Sports en Espanol

August 19:

Olympique Lyonnais v Anderlecht, Fox Soccer Channel

Panathinaikos v Atletico Madrid, Fox Sports en Espanol

August 25:

Maccabi Haifa v Salzburg, Fox Soccer Channel

Atletico Madrid v Panathinaikos, FSN and Fox Sports en Espanol

August 26:

Arsenal v Celtic, Fox Soccer Channel

Fiorentina v Sporting, Fox Sports en Espanol

Anything to back up that they are aiming for Jan '10?

I've been digging around and the only PRs or articles I can find say before 2010. However, those are from Dec '08, so I would count them as accurate.

It's sad that LFC is gonna be on FSC Wednesday and I won't be able to watch my Reds in HD.

Direct TV will have up to 8 games in HD per matchday if available for free that are not on the other 3-4 main channels.

FSN/Comcast Sportnet will get the main game in HD per Uefa contract to that channel because of the requirement to reach more people, FSC, Fox Espanhol, Setanta have the others.

The Fox info is here: http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/5648992 , which is dated Aug 17, 2009.

As noted, this isn't really the issue: I'm on TW and have NO expectation that they'll rush to add an FSC HD stream even when it becomes available.

Cool, I hadn't seen that FAQ, hopefully D12 will be active for DirecTV and it will get added day one.

It looks like ManU/Besiktas is on HDALT 444 on Dish Network; I think it is a fox/FSC affiliate channel...FOXFL HD is currently blank but showing that a UEFA Champions League match on the programming guide. Setanta 406 is showing Chelsea/Porto not in HD but still being shown free as part of the preview week that ends on the 20th, and Marseille Milan is on FSC 149.

Can't wait to see FSC in HD, hopefully it will show up sooner rather than later. Cox here in Tucson has been good in the last few months about adding new HD channels, hopefully that will continue, and not be like July 2008-April 2009 where no new channels were added...

Currently watching my favorite team, AC Milan, on FSC in SD. The Manchester United game on FSN Arizona in HD looks pretty good from what I can tell, but not even HD can keep me from watching my team...

Are the Marseille fans doing the tomahawk chop?

The only HD game I think I got (DishNetwork) was ManU/Besiktas. The picture was fine, except for some flicker/dropouts. The commentary, on the other hand, was abysmal. Surely some English TV network sent a crew to Turkey? I do understand there are probably contractual reasons why we had to put up with a guy watching from a TV studio somewhere. Still, we get a lot of that here and sometimes it is not so bad, but this was awful. Very little, or at times no crowd noise, the commentator sounded distracted, disinterested and unprepared (especially early in the game - he did improve some). Maybe the worst bit, though, was that he kept giving score updates for other games that I was planning to watch later.

It was mentioned all over the place when they announced the UEFA deal. They had originally hoped for the end of the year, but have since changed it to January.

That was the "national game" for this week. One game is chosen and shown in HD on the FS Regional Sports Network.

Thanks for the links. This past year I haven't been online as much and keeping up with everything, being a first time dad has taken priority

I agree. I wonder if FOX realizes that would reduce viewership for other games if the scores are known already. Also, I wonder why the Milan vs Marseilles was not in HD. It was originally on FSC but was shown on FSN-HD the next day, in SD of course!

Because they used a reply of the FSC feed. Once FSC goes HD in the near future, I don't think we'll run into that problem.
