Hey everyone,

So I've been tasked with finding a new TV for my dad, he wants an LCD (something that won't even have a chance of burning), 40" (that's what'll fit on the TV stand), and inexpensive ($1500 or under). He likes Sony and Samsung.

First question, for a 40" HDTV, would 1080p be any benefit, or is 720p just as good (since the screen is on the smaller side)?

Second, for 1080p, I'm thinking either the Sony KDL-40V4100 or the Samsung LN40A550 (went to Best Buy at lunch today and thought both looked pretty darn good...slight edge to the Sony but $150 more expensive)...would anyone hands-down recommend one over the other? I have read some odd things about the Sony in it's official thread (sparkling effect, clicking sounds)?

This needs to be something that's going to be hassle-free.

Thanks!

Believe it or not, if you know where to look, you can even find the LN40A650 (adds 120Hz and better PQ and interactivity features) for just under that budget. I'll give you a hint: "Big River in the Rainforest."
