UHD/4K media playback

Hi guys,

I ve been away for a few years from home cinema. Back it my days (1080p :)) I used a Dune or Popcorn Hour media player to play my .M2TS/.ISO files.

I ve downloaded some Blu-Ray 4K rips. What is used best these days to play them? I don t want to spend $$$$ on a MadVR HTPC setup. Just "plain passthrough" of the content with support for HDR is fine for me.

And what if I don t bother Dolby Vision?
I use a oppo 203, shield as well as a Apple TV 4K. I prefer the Apple TV but any work.

Haven’t bothered with an HTPC in many years. Not worth it.

Thanks for your reply.
Oppo 203 is above my budget.
from the Shield I ve heard it does not support Dolby Atmos passthough
Apple TV 4K sound as a nice option because I m a Apple fan but i cannot imagine that Apple will support my downloaded .ISO .M2TS blu-ray rips

The shield does support atmos. But the current one does not support Dolby vision. I have a shield but I don’t know how to play full disc rips on it which is where I use my oppo. The current shield also has horrible upconversion.

On the atv4k using infuse it does do full disc rips. Just no atmos. But you do get HD audio with infuse. No Dolby vision from rips. Only streaming services.

However I reencode everything. With my settings you can’t see a difference from the original.

If you want bitstream audio/HDR10 then the current shield will do. If you want DolbyVision then wait for the new shield to be released.

i wonder if the shield pro will play full dolby vision disc rips. i have never used one of these. i have been satisfied with infuse and my blu ray rips but now with 4k rips i would love a player that can play them uncompressed with full menus etc. i dont mind using the oppo i just rather not have to hook up the external drive to it and would prefer to stream directly from my computer.

The pro part doesn’t matter. That’s just more storage. The newer shield does Dolby vision but we really don’t know any details.
I don’t know if the shield can do what you want. I haven’t figured out how. Mostly my shield collects dust and I only fire it up when I want to test something as I find it inferior to the atv4k and oppo. I hope the new one will fix my issues with it.

If someone knows how I can test full rips with menus on it I’d be happy to give it a go. If time allows I’ll mess with it today.

Back in the day i would play back my full blu ray rips with a sony blu ray player, that was until I discovered infuse which plays back full blu ray rips minus the menus and HD audio which I was ok with since I was getting the full video quality from the blu ray. Now I'm back to playing my rips on a blu ray player, now being an UHD Blu Ray Player. I doubt there will be another way that gives us full quality of the UHD rip but one could dream :)

Infuse does HD audio.

You can also reencode the movies with something more compatible that looks identical to the original. I have nearly 2000 encodes I’ve made. Visually you can’t notice a difference from the disc with my settings. They look identical.
You can also just rip them as an mkv and not reencode them but the file size is much larger. And you won’t have menus or DV.

I only keep the full disc rip for movies that I really like with Dolby vision as you lose DV when encoding. So I only have maybe a dozen of those.
Infuse does HD audio.

atmos or dts x?

Not object based. It does Dolby truehd and dts ma hd
I have and can not recommend enough almost any Zidoo box, they just work and playback HDR content inc ISO rips etc with no issues at all. Either the X9S or Z9S are both great - once you work out how to use both the remote and the GUI you will soon understand that there is little out there at this price point that even comes close. I got my box second hand for under £100 ($140), but even new they are not that expensive, especially if you get one from China or Hong Kong etc via ebay etc.

I went through many crappy Android boxes, HTPC's, Raspery PI's etc, got the Zidoo and went OMG this is exactly what I always wanted and needed, I wish I had known about this box first.

hmm really? how do I get this to work on my set up? When playing back Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA my soundbar displays Dolby Digital.

Depends on what your sound bar supports and how your tv outputs it and if those support HD audio. I run everything through a receiver so it’s easier.

In atv settings under audio I have change format off.

Though I don’t know that hd audio would have much of an effect with a soundbar.

I wouldn't even worry about HD audio if you are using a sound bar. Infuse will convert TrueHD and DTS-HD MA to 7.1 PCM, so your sound bar will need to support multi-channel PCM audio over HDMI.

my soundbar supports atmos, dtsx and eARC. i suppose I could try and connect the apple tv directly to one of the soundbar's input and see what happens. Yes I know a soundbar is not ideal for object based audio but this is what I'm working with at the moment :) until I upgrade to a full speaker system which I plan to do as soon as I see a good sale.

i got this from the specs. Does this mean if I connect my apple tv directly to one of the HDMI inputs I'll get the HD sound?

HDMI INPUT
Dolby® Digital, Dolby Digital Plus™, Dolby® True HD, Dolby Atmos®, Dolby® Dual mono, DTS®, DTS-HD High-Resolution Audio™, DTS-HD Master Audio™, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24, DTS:X™, LPCM (2ch/5.1ch/7.1ch), DSD (2ch/5.1ch)

Depends if your tv supports HD audio/PCM over earc. Most don’t. And those that do support atmos usually only support the lossy kind.
Something you’ll have to look in to.
