There is a shortcoming of information as to what cards provide SPDIF (AC3) output in what DVD Player they work and in what OS. I'd like to try to create a reference document for myself and others to review when deciding what card to buy.

Please help by adding feedback on the capabilities of your card and the operating system you are using. Just copy the header below and fill it out in your response.

Here is my experience...

Not to muddy the waters, this is a good idea, would it be a good idea to also differentiate between SPDIF data types (ie DTS and DD)?

Instead of a Y or N in the respective columns how about using one of the following:

DD/DTS

DD

DTS

N

I had not problem getting DTS work under Win2000

Click there to see My screenshot DTS ON in WinDVD.

Open the Mixer change Spk to Live!Surround You need pick the rigth Spk setup with in WinDVD 4spk or 5.1spk in the Audio tab note if you system drag try pushing stop then play after getting pass the Main DVD menu there the play button is, One other note you should this any way so the DTS

will kick in and the icon will show up to in WinDVD.

SHS:

You are not outputting SPDIF. I can tell from your WinDVD Control panel (it says 4 spkr output) that you are converting the DTS and downmixing it to your four channel audio card.

The problem seems to be outputing DTS using the SPDIF digital pass-through.

cmedia 8738 based cards do SPDIF output of DD DTS & 44.1kHz audio under win2kSP2 with WDM driver 6.23.

I think the Zoltrix Nightingale Pro 6 uses this chipset? I have only got WinDVD to work though, never PowerDVD.

Did I say SPDIF no beside it kind of hard to do that SPDIF digital pass-through with SBLive Value Rev 1 board it even hard to do DTS to under Win200 being it not support way but DD is any way eazy to get around Win9x Kernel not so eazy under Win2000/XP.

Remember that EMU10K1 processor came out in 1998 and make for Win98 at the time.

First, it is my belief that EMU10K1 had a major flaw in the silicon itself.

Creative itself didn't detect it until Win2K went beta until 1999.

Since the flaw was in the silicon itself, trying to fix it with software just made a bad situation worse.

All of the other competitors sound cards (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, The Game Theater XP, and the Philips Edge series cards) had access to Win2K betas and RC's or final during the board development.

Creative did not.

Why CL ever come up with 5.1 Series I never now I thougth dunb idea in first place.

What you should have benn asking is this

OS_______PLAYER___MANUFACTURER___MODEL_____SPDIF/DD___SPDIF/DTS

WIN9X____WINDVD___Creative_______SB Live!__?__________?

WIN9X____POWERDVD_Creative_______SB Live!__?__________?

WIN2KSP2_WINDVD___Creative_______SB Live!__?__________?

The Live Value II works fine for ac3/dts out under Win9x and Win2000 with PowerDVD and WinDVD using the hacked 3300a WDM set.

The Voretx2 works fine for ac3/dts out under Win9x ONLY with PowerDVD and WinDVD using the 2048/2050 VXD set. Win2000 I offer no comment.

The CMI8738 works fine for ac3/dts out under Win9x and Win2000 with PowerDVD and WinDVD using the hacked Xeno 6.23 WDM set. THe final VXD set (1095d) also works for Win9x.

I would not buy a card that does not output dts as like most of you, I too have a substantial collection of dts DVD.

I just upgraded to win2k and am able to use the S/PDIF pass through on my Live! MP3 5.1. I used the 3300 Live! Drivers. Not the 3219. The 3300 drivers were much easier than trying to install the Chinese version of 3219's. I am using WinDVD 2000 (Patched with 2.6). There was a specific process that I had to go through to get it to work. Let me know if anyone would be interested in my step by step. I have not tried any other players cause I actually like the WinDVD. I do not own any DTS so I cannot comment on that either. But I do know that the main problem is getting the S/PDIF to work and pass DD to the receiver correctly. Mine does that perfectly. I will have to rent a DTS and see if it works also. I will let you know.

PowerDVD : DD & DTS

WinDVD : DD & DTS

I also have a Fortissimo II on another PC but it's to far from my AV amplifier to test... :)

The Guillemot Fortisimmo (the first one, not the "2") works fine for ac3 out through optical s/pdif under Win98 with bundled driver.

This is with PowerDVD 3 and WinDVD (at least old 2.2 I've been using quite some time ago)

That's not complete at all, but that's a start http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

Maybe we should add an interface column to the table as well?

eg.

Zoltrix Nightingale Pro 6: ci,co,oi,oo (coax in, coax out, optical in, optical out)

No one made me an offer for my .sig so I'm going to keep it.
