Lots of deals going on w/ Ultra DMA100 Harddrives. So, quick question to those of you who have built a media server.

I'm planning on using a budget AMD/MoBo config, starting with 2x250 GB Ultra DMA 100 harddrives.

This server is budget, intending to simply store and deliver content when requested by the high-end clients.

I may even put MainLobby on this server w/ its server extensions, conntected to the clients via 10/100 cables.

- Can any of you tell me if this is a sufficient configuration for disk speed, and if not, what would you recommend? Ultra133, SATA?

- What bottlenecks would I encounter over time as I begin to add more content to the media server with the disk speed?

Thank you very much.

your biggest bottleneck will be your LAN speed.

I have a 1/2 Tb media server (linux) using ata33 drives (RAID5)...and I can easily saturate the nic...

Not necessary, but dma100 drives are nice.

Most of today's current drives can only burst near the 133 spec, most last time I looked averaged 40-60mb/s so it's still really a moot issue going faster. SATA is definitely nice, but realistically a bit pricey still.

I agree with bykster, your real limit will be network. See if you can get a Gig-E setup going if you are really moving a lot of data. Not cheap either but if you're infrastructure is in place it's much easier to buff up the data archival after the fact.
