Mic and MiniDSP just came in, ahead of schedule.  Time to measure in room and post some graphs today!

Sweet, looking forward to it. Wish I could say mine showed up ahead of schedule.

Wow, have to figure out what the hell im doing.  Am I supposed to hook up the laptop to my receiver for output signals?

I'm assuming you're using REW and you have a loptop with HDMI out? If so then yes; you're HDMI out will connect to the HDMI in on your receiver. You will send the test tones via your laptop to the receiver, which will be recorded via the mic and graphed on your laptop.
If you haven't read through it; here's a great writeup outlining the best way to utilize the program.

Wow this just made things simple.  I was thinking I would have to go to Radio shack and get all kinds of funky adapters for the headphone jack or something.  Phew.

No prob. REW has a steep initial learning curve, but once you get the hang of it it's smooth sailing. Looking forward to seeing your graphs.

So looks like I need to jump the headphone jack output on the laptop to the mic input in order to calibrate the soundcard of the laptop?

I'd post this in the REW section. It's been a while since I had REW up and running but if using HDMI, I don't believe you need to calibrate the sound card? That's only when using a non USB microphone. I do know on my UMM mic I had to calibrate the input on the mic to match my DB meter, but this isn't necessary for the UMIK.

Well still working on getting it set up.  Not sure if i can do this without an SPL meter.  More reading to do.

I could have sworn the mini mic didn't require an SPL meter. I know my UMM did. I'm pretty sure it outlines it somewhere in that war and peace novel of a thread, lol.

OK I know I do not have things set up right.  Still trying to figure out how to get the correct SPL.  Not sure if I need to purchase an SPL meter to calibrate the mic, or if I need to account for background noise etc etc.

Yeah its hard sifting through hundreds of threads.  Some of the setup articles seem outdated or don't apply to the UMIK-1

Here's a link specifically referencing the umik from mini dsp. Didn't read through it all but should help answer some questions for ya.

I had to use a spl meter to calibrate Rew to the mic on order to get the levels right. Even though the mic came with a cal. File. I did not think you had to do this with a umik-1 but it would not hurt to double check.
With the Umik-1 you don't need to use a SPL meter.

from Page 48 of the PDF I linked to:
Quote:
USB Microphones with Sensitivity parameters: Special Considerations

The current version of REW (beta 17 or above) has direct support for both the UMM-6 and the UMIK-1 mics. Specifically, REW will recognize these mics, prompt for a calibration file, and allow you to proceed to taking measurements without running the Microphone Calibration step.

if you did not buy the mic from Cross spectrum then nothing else is needed.

If you did buy from CS then you need to add the "sensitivity factor" from the manufactured web site by downloading it there after entering the Mic's Serial Number.

Well, got almost everything working, uploaded an eq file to the minidsp to flatten out the response, but have not figured out how to hook up the mini dsp .  Done for the night, even though the expected graph was pretty damn flat, I did not get a chance to remeasure.  If I can figure out how to wire up the minidsp i might try again tomorrow.

Here is the graph that REW/miniDSP predicts after eq:

If I can figure out how to get the mini dsp hooked up I will run some sweeps and see how close it actually comes.

PB2000 in room, miniDSP EQ applied.  Still have some work to do but not bad for a quick attempt with a single sub: (no smoothing)

MiniDSP seems to be dropping the sub output level quite a bit so I have some fiddling to do when I have more time.  I also plan to add my Polk PSW110 nearfield as an experiment on how it affects in room response even though it is a much different sub.
