"I must admit that the long thread about giving up on lcds is giving me second thought even reading the threads about the people excited about getting their Z2s. " #1

What have we done to LCDs and 1DLPs, guys? How many (tens of) thousands folks will be dissuaded by reading our rants? If taken verbatim, outside of context, the posts of "Done with LCD" are depressive indeed .... I'm guilty as well, but the apprentice wizard doesn't know how to undo the done.

Any PJ, at any cost point, DLP or LCD, is a sensational --almost magic-- experience, when compared to TVs big or small (LCD and plasmas included). That's what matters. Mitch

Yeah sucks that some might see what I said and put all this value into it and think LCD pjs are junk just because I am tired of ONE issue that I think could be eliminated from occuring if they wanted it to be.

But oh well, if people wish to jump to conclusions and all that stuff and cant' think for themselves then that is their problem.

I still really enjoy my z2 and think it is incredible for the price and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for their first pj for under 2 grand.

What you say is true--- INITIALLY! The massive image size impresses you for awhile, but unfortunately, with time, irritants emerge because the technology is still young.

As of late, I've been stunned at how much better a plasma is in most areas than my Z2. The sheer image pop, smooth image, vibrant colors and contrast leave my projector in the dust. The reason is simple--- a smaller image will outperform a large on in image quality.

After years in this hobby, I have learned that there are many pros to projectors.... unfortunately many cons. Small displays have a lot less cons and 1 BIG con: image size. There is no perfect display technology at any price point. Each has to decide which set of pros and cons they can live with the best.

JP, my experience differes somehow. I have some top plasmas downstairs in a lab. Not only that I dislike their harsh digital image -- far from smooth, with un-natural colors-- but we also wonder at their fast decay, dimmer by the quarter. They burn at an amazing rate, contrast gets lower, but their smoothness is still missing. I keep comparing to film; PJs are getting closer every year, while plasmas seem to go the TV way, on steroids.Mitch

It really depends on the plasma models... there is a huge variation in picture quality by model and manufacturer. I don't care for the image quality of most plasmas. I was looking at a 50" LG display the other day and it looked terrible.

After many years of waiting, I found the smoothness, colors and contrast on the Panasonic 42" HD displays stunning... so I jumped in. Now, it is brand new so perhaps PQ will decay with age-- sobeit and I'll move onto OLED or whatever. Until then, I'm watching some great PQ.

I'm not a plasma guy myself, but I haven't looked into them extensively. To me the cost to size ratio isn't good for my tastes. I admit that projecting too large an image with LCD is not good. With my L200 I find that making the screen size a little smaller than I can go, which is only 3 or 4 inches diagonal smaller, makes the picture nicer, smoother, and much more pleasant. Sure I'd like larger, but really, its 90" diagonal and thats more than enough to satisfy me that I'm not looking at a TV.

One thing you have to do is accept the technology and learn to live with it. I may upgrade to a better LCD projector, but the L200 is still very enjoyable. The big difference is to recognize good DVD's from poor ones. I notice that poor DVD's really do suck and good ones make me stare at the screen in disbelief that I'm supposedly looking at the absolute bare minimum of LCD adequacy. Sometimes close-ups of peoples faces leave me wanting nothing, and yet other times I see flaws and poor contrast/black levels.

As far as rlindo's plight goes, I totally feel your pain about having issues and having to ship things. Bottom line is buy something with a warranty you are comfortable with and hopefully, one with a Canadian warranty if you're up here in Canada.

I agree. When I posted my comments on the AE300 and AE500 when they came out I often mentioned that we were being purposely nit-picky and people should keep this in mind. Most people will be blown away by any of these projectors here. Then I think the key might be to stay away from this forum and discussions of the smaller details that many of us get into. I think these discussions are useful, but maybe there should be a big warning at the top about most of the public not seeing the minutia and being blown away pretty much any of these in properly light controlled environments.

As far as compared to plasmas, I think this is another one of those "blondes vs brunettes" kind of things. Many will prefer the plasmas and many will prefer the images from these front projectors.

Yes, but it's always nice to try BOTH and see which you like best. Preferably side by side for a direct comparison! lol

Sorry... couldn't resist.

I think an even better sample size could be Blondes, Brunettes and Redheads all side by side for a direct comparison! :) I think the test would have to be performed multiple times. :) :) Somehow I don't think my wife would agree........

Like I like to say, if people are here complaining about issues it is because they like it and want the small bugs to be improved. If there were no pros or if the pros where less then the cons then no one would keep them and no one would be complaining. If you like something enough you will find something about it that can be (in your mind at least) improved and you will complain about it to try and get the improvement.

Yes, and the newer models, when paired with the older hardware that you already have, may tend to be unreliable and fickle. It's almost as if the newer it is, the worse the warranty! Then you have to keep throwing money at them in upgrades, at the same time tweaking your older hardware with newfangled fixes from a bottle in an attempt just to keep up.

BTW, I have no personal experience of what I said above... just what my friends tell me. Yeah, that's the ticket!
