-edit, Resolved! Check out post 12!

Any ideas?

Mobo: Zotac 9300 775: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-019-_-Product

OS: Win7

I've been messing w/ this for the better part of an afternoon!

You don't provide a ton of info here...what exactly have you tried? Any other hardware installed? Have you enabled the proper sleep states in the BIOS?

Knowing nothing else, my first suggestion would be to try the MCE Standby Tool. It's very simple to set up, and it will automatically configure your sleep states based on the criteria you give it.
I'm wondering if there's anything in general I need to do once I've WOL? IE tell the computer that I've woken that it's okay to go back to sleep, via turning off the connect, "disconnecting" the drives or whatever.

Here's my setup and what I want to do:

PC#1 that I want to S3 is my HTPC.

PC#2 is my office PC.

I want to keep my HTPC in my HT room "on" 24/7, but in S3 when not in use. I want to be able to connect to the HTPC whenever I want from my office PC so I can move media to it. Once I'm done moving media to it (or once I'm done watching TV on the HTPC), I want the HTPC to goto S3 mode.

I can provide all the gory details if needed, I've even gone thru these steps but it's still shaky, my HTPC won't resume, won't go to S3, or will just randomly start up again, it's friggen frustrating as hell. http://www.exoid.com/?page_id=47

Well I've definitely figured out the issue. Once I've WOL'd the HTPC, it still thinks there's a connection even though I'm done transfering files. The only way for it to idle back to S3 mode is if I reboot the HTPC so it 'forgets' the connection to my Office Desktop.

I guess my only choice is to find the opposite of the WOL, a "SOL" suspend/sleep on lan.
Running CMD as administrator and then running: "powercfg -requests"

I get:
Quote:
DISPLAY:

None.

SYSTEM:

[DRIVER] \\FileSystem\\srvnet

An active remote client has recently sent requests to this machine.

AWAYMODE:

None.

So that's my problem, I need to make my remote client (my office desktop) go 'inactive'
Well if I override it via "powercfg -requestsoverride DRIVER srvnet System" it'll allow my HTPC to goto sleep.. HOWEVER, it'll also go to sleep when I'm transferring files to the machine or streaming video from the HTPC

LoL... why is it so impossible to get this stuff set up!!! This shouldn't be this hard M$!!!
Have you tried MCE Standby Tool like I suggested? Also, go through your device manager and check which components you have allowed to wake your computer and which you have not.
To chime in here: I had same exact problem, couldn't for the sake of me eliminate the problem. I was finally able to isolate it to iTunes and the fact that it was either still running or had background programs running (e.g., itunes helper or bonjour service).

My suggestion is put the PC to go into S3 after 1-2 minutes. Then, disable programs one-by-one, starting with iTunes (assuming you have it running). See if it will then go back into standby,

In my case, I was ONLY able to eliminate it after re-installing a new mobo and new OS. I know that may not be an option. My only point is you may be able to isolate it to a program.

EDIT: At least you were able to put it into S3 AND get it to WOL!! That's usually 90% of the battle!
jreese831, no, I haven't messed with that tool. I'd only like to as a last resort, but I may break down and try it this weekend.

I talked to one of my geeky friends this week. Since I'm basically wanting my HTPC to act as a 'up and down' server, I'm going out of the 'norm' since servers are, well, usually always on 24/7. He suggested to find/build some sort of application that would scan the HTPC to see if any files are being transferred, and if not, shut down the PC.

I'm ready to throw in the towel though, I spent 2 solid days trying to figure this out.. its just not worth it

Mike, I'd strongly encourage you try to the MST tool. It really works well and eliminated any odd sleep issues I had once configured properly.

mike 01hawk, I too feel your pain; in fact I've been trying to get my PC to use W7 64-bit Sleep properly for weeks and haven't got it right yet. And the same PC works perfectly when I dual-boot to XP Pro x64...

I spent a few days with MST and it was no help.

MS imo has messed-up royally w/W7 Power Options as they are driving many "upgraders" to running their PCs 24/7 (we're not the only ones having trouble)!

Well I'll be! It's resolved!!!

Last night I was transferring some files to the HTPC. Normally I manually turn it off after I've finished transferring. Well, last night I went to have dinner instead. I came back an hour later and the PC was in S3 mode, fans weren't spinning!!!

I was like WTF? So I replicated the steps several times. Come to find out, the HTPC will try several times to go into S3 mode!!! So, I'd finish a transfer, or streaming and the HTPC wouldn't initially go to sleep, but then after around 10 min or so.. BOOM... it went to sleep!

Groovy!!!
