New to the HT world and still in construction phase - i've been sort've window shopping my setup together.

Now that i've shopped all my components together i've reached a point that is all new territory...how do i control this stuff universally.

Is there a tablet style standalone control (not an iOS or android app) that controls home theater as well as ZWave. I've read Harmony along side it's extender hub may be the ticket but have read some terrible reviews on it.

I don't want to buy a tablet and add an app, i already have an IPad and i don't carry it around the house.

If you have a need for whole home audio, then this is a great DIY product to check out:

If you're looking for something professionally programmed (doesn't necessarily mean super expensive):

There's also more opened up DIY control from Luxone, iRule, but it's a little bit more complicated and you have to have a good idea of what you're willing to take on. You might want to post a little bit about your project and your comfort level with configuring your system so that people can make more specific recommendations.

Thanks for the quick reply and high level info.

Your right, should've been a lot more specific.

Epson HC 8345
Denon X1300W
AppleTV or some other smart device for content (depends on remote capabilities)

I will either go Insteon or ZWave for automation, i like ZWave a little better but i think they are relatively close from what i've read.

I'm a software engineer and solution architect (.Net) by trade so getting into it isn't too intimidating as much as it is a potential challenge that i'd love to take on.

Now, given that i do that stuff day after day i would have a ton more appreciation for not having to do it and enjoy the fruits of someone else's labor:)

I am the kinda of person that will like to sit down in my comfy theater, pick up the remote from and go to town. Trying to leave my ios devices out of the room just because i'm on them all day...this is my escape pod.

The theater consumes just one room, however the idea is that if it is ZWave/insteon compatible i would have access to any device in the network...thus could control the lights in the theater or in any other room.

So two part answer i guess...theater in one room, automation housewide (due to nature of automation)

Is it just the one room?
