Does anyone know something about this title?

I watched this on one of DirecTV's 3D channels a couple of nights ago. My wife and I were very unimpressed with the 3D in this title. I've seen around 7 shows/movies so far and this was the worst in terms of 3D quality imho. I don't know if it's any better on the blu-ray disc, but I wouldn't think it would be that drastic. Besides, I've seen some quality stuff so far on the DirecTV channels, but this one just didn't cut it imo.
Stay far away from this if its anything like the Directv version(I assume its close if not the same)

Really bad ghosting, poor 3D, and bad film/documentary overall-Bad CG and boring. (and this is coming from someone who is a space geek)

pass on this one unfortunately
I know the program itself got bad reviews on here but is anybody buying this this Tuesday? Amazon has it listed for 1/11/11 release but Best Buy ad today shows this coming out on Tuesday.

I usually blind buy 3D stuff and I'm a sucker for anything related to universe (saw Hubble 3D at IMAX and loved it. Well, at least the universe part) but I'm not liking what I'm reading about this on this thread. I was hoping someone was going to buy it to "test" it out for the rest of us.
Anybody?

I think this is an excellent 3D experience. The narrative is usually a person in a field discussing the 7 wonders of the solar system. I was impressed with the 3D of all the 7 but particularly the sun as a red burning globe with flames shooting out. The video is about 45 minutes but very well done.

I'm also a sucker for 3D and astronomy so as long as Best Buy doesn't slap a $40 pricetag on it, I'll probably pick it up by the weekend if it is in fact available at the stores. I'll be sure to post some impressions if I get it.

I take all 3D reviews with a grain of salt as the experience varies from person to person. Everyone complained about Dinosaurs Alive but I thought it had some great 3D. Everyone raved about Wild Ocean but I thought the underwater stuff was very underwhelming.
I believe this title was in yesterday's Best Buy ad for $24.99 with a restricted retail release on 12/07. Not a bad price at $24.99 and unless the user opinions are overwhelmingly negative, maybe worth a purchase (?)

Right now it's for $21.49. For some reason the link doesn't work. I can't copy and paste either. I guess Best Buy website is weird that way. I'll probably just pick it up for $21.49 tomorrow. Probably will order online and pick it up at store since the ad DID say $24.99.
This is 3D version of the History channels Universe TV series first episode from fifth season.
Best Buy on-line still lists this release as a pre-order for 12/07 (?). The price is attractive at only $21.49. Has anybody found this in-store? The web page only shows "pre-order" for the brick and mortar locations in my area. How bad can it be for $21.00?

Hmmm. That is weird. I ordered it yesterday and immediately got an e-mail from them that it'll be ready for pick up today. I was going to stop by after work. But you're right, it doesn't say "available now" like it should. Now I'm wondering if my trip will be a time waster. Oh well, I'll try.

Yeah, Amazon has it listed for 1/11/11 so I wondered if Best Buy made a mistake. But if you google it for Best Buy, the link shows it as "Best Buy Exclusive". So I'm guessing BB got the right to sell it a month early? That's my guess.
Well, picked up my copy from Best Buy and just finished watching it. I'm happy with the purchase. Wasn't mind blowing but... 3ducational. Had the most crosstalk I've seen 'til now on my Mitsubishi 73738. I usually don't see any crosstalk but early on it was clearly visible. Still I enjoyed it. Traveling through the asteroid field was brief but that was probably my favorite. And the sun in 3D looked fantastic. But that's probably because that was actually filmed in "3D".

So yeah, looks like Best Buy got it a month before others. Of course, came home and saw 10% off coupon from Best Buy in my mail. Since this one's on sale this week, it *shouldn't* be eligible for 10% discount but all you need to find is a clueless cashier and they'll punch anything in. So you *could* get it for under $20 before tax.

Are you using DLP link or IR emitter?

IR emitter.
Got my copy yesterday and finally was able to watch it a little earlier tonight and I really enjoyed it. I'm something of an astronomy buff so this was right up my alley. While the CG visuals didn't have a 100% photorealistic look to them the 3D effect for the most part was very good and celestial objects like Jupiter hanging in space had a really massive look to them. Even more impressive was some of the live action 3D photography of scientists giving more info and the beautiful terrestrial vistas during the segment on planet Earth.

The segments of various scientists explaining each of the seven wonders had some nice 3D depth to it and their presentations were enthusiastic and energetic, not the usual dry, boring monotone delivery in these types of shows.

As far as ghosting went, it really wasn't bad at all with only a few shots of asteroid fields in front of a completely black space background being being the only really noticeable passages. Nearly all the rest of the visuals including Jupiter, Saturn's Rings and the sun, all had negligible ghosting and excellent depth.

This actually turned out to be one of my favorite 3D BluRays, especially for the price Best Buy had on it.

Hello all, I have a PS3 that I use as a Blu-Ray 3D player and a Samsung PN58C8000 3DTV. I picked up the Universe 3D disc at Best buy for $21.49 and went home to watch it only to find that it won't play in 3D on my PS3. The option to play in 3D comes up on the menu but when I click it, it plays in 2D. Nothing is blurry and my TV won't pick up a 3D signal and won't let me turn on my glasses. Please let me know what I can do about this.

Three things to try:

1. Make sure you have a high-speed HDMI cable connecting the PS3 to the TV.

2. Make sure you have the latest firmware on your PS3.

3. Go thru the PS3's display setup screen again; when you do that, the PS3 should automatically detect that you have a 3D TV and give you the option to enable 3D support.

I had to do step 3 when I bought my 3D TV even though my firmware was up to date so I suspect that's all you'll need to do. Good luck.

Got this disc and it has some cool scenes and was worthwhile for me overall, and I'm an astronomy (and 3d) nerd.

But like the rest of the Universe series they should have used more real images from space probes, even in 2d, rather than repeating so many fake 3d cg scenes.

Also they show the moon with the far side facing the earth.

They made some bad 3D mistakes they should have caught in a "professional" release like this:

-Titles in the 7 wonders countdown are all inside out-- the characters appear behind the stars.

-The outside sequences with the scientists are misaligned and caused me discomfort and eyestrain. If you take your glasses off you can see the trees, etc., are offset vertically-- for 3D stereo, objects should only be offset horizontally.

-The titles on the scientist scenes appear inside the people, not in front.

- At 9:25 the big rocks in Saturn's rings are behind the background stars.

- In the theatre scene the screen is in front of the seats.

- The sun scenes at 29:15 and 34:50 are inside out, the sun appears concave rather than convex.

Didn't anyone check this with 3d glasses before releasing it?

Just a thought, but from the way you describe it, it sounds like the left and right images are backwards. Did you try swapping the images on your tv to see if it makes a difference?
