I dont really know too much about this field but i was just thinking if it is possible to upconvert any 480i material (dvd) to a higher resolution like 720p or 1080i ? I know few tv stations do upconvert films to higher resolution and I know they are using expensive upconverters I am just wondering if at all is it possibel to get a good quality upconvert from any of these filters we use with avisynth or virtualdub for example...is there any software, filters can do a good job upconverting these materials?...Any answer is highly appreciated just for my own curiosity.

Thanks

I'm not familiar with avisynth or virtualdub. But it's certainly possible to scale 480i streams to 720p or 1080i with some video editing apps. It usually works best on 30fps or 24fps (reverse telecined) progressive streams. Interlaced material won't look quite as good scaled up. And there will be a certain amount of loss in the conversion due to recompression.
