Upconverting DVD Player over HDMI (Philips 42PF7320A) recommendations?

I have the above plasma, and am looking to finally retire my Polaroid DVD/VCR combideck (has only component or composite outputs, and only scales to 480p over YPbPr). I'm looking for an upconverting player with HDMI support (as the Philips has dual HDMI inputs); however, I have no idea what HDMI version the Philips supports.

HDMI version won't matter for DVD players.

The Oppo 970 is well-liked here for $149. For somewhat less, the Sony DVP75H. You can see test reports on both here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi .

HDMI version won't matter. DVD players don't use the latest HDMI features.

In fact, very few components do. See:

What is your price range? The Sony and Oppos are very popular at the lower price range. Moving up, there are the Denon 2930 and 3930 (for even better PQ, better build, and better audio, including SACD and DVD-A, if that matters to you). And another option is to go true high def. For HD-DVD, all the Toshiba players will play HD-DVDs as well as do a great job upscaling SD DVDs (as good as the dedicated upscaling SD DVD players). The brand new Samsung 1200 BD player also does a great job upscaling SD DVDs (and of course plays BDs).
