I'm also very interested in the answer to this. My ancient Pioneer PRO-510HD only has component inputs.

Yes. If the copy protection is not there then it upconverts no problem.

Stace

This is what I'd been thinking for the past few months or so but recently I've seen posts telling me otherwise. Guess I'll need to buy some more D/L discs

Or if you wanna save money do what I do. Use DVDFab Platinum or Clone DVD etc.. split the movie across to single layer discs. Saves cash that way unless you know of a place to buy Verbatim D/L discs (the only D/L discs worth squat) for about $0.50 apiece.

I understand this. I also understand that even in the absence of CSS, some (most?) DVD players STILL won't output upconverted signals through component. Makes their job easier, I suppose. A "backup" DVD or a DVD of Aunt Millie's 80th birthday still wouldn't be upconverted on these players.

I've read that the A1 and A2 will, in fact, upconvert unencrypted SD-DVDs using component. I wonder if the same is true of the XA2?

Are you insane? Why would you want to split a movie over 2 disks just to save a buck or two? Talk about ghetto!

If you could afford 6-700 DVDs, then you could afford to buy DL DVD blanks!

lol, well I can get S/L dvd's for about 20 cents per disk ($20 per $100 pack). the cheapest I can get for D/L's is about $1.15 per disk. Rather large difference when it stacks up. I probably could get the D/L's but I try to save money whenever I can. If I get the same quality as a d/l disc over 2 discs and it still costs less, there's the path I choose.

I have the A20. It will upconvert SD DVD's without CSS or with CSS stripped of.

Upconverts to 1080p over HDMI but limited to 1080i over component.

The latter is a player limitation. page 20 in the manual
