Upconverting player appropriate for me?

967 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  wmcclain
Hello,

I'm considering purchasing an upconverting DVD player, and in reading on this forum and elsewhere, it seems that (correct me if I'm wrong) upscaling can occur either in the player of in the display. Additionally, it seems that some displays take advantage of these players better than others, yes?

At any rate, I am presently using a progressive-scan DVD changer (a cheap JVC) and my display is a Panasonic pt-53wx53. This is a rear-projection CRT that goes up to 1080i, and it has a DVI connection.

Will my DVDs look substantially better with, say, an Oppo?

Thanks,

ecove

edit: and if anyone has a recommendation (besides an Oppo, which I'm considering) for a player, as well as whether to connect via HDMI->DVI vs component, I'm all ears

Generally CRT HDTV (especially at 53") does not benefit as much from upscaling, but you can only find out if you like it or not by trying it out. Go to BB and get the $65 Philips 5982 and a HDMI->DVI cable to try 1080i and see how it looks to you (assuming your HDTV is HDCP compliant via DVI). Take it back if you don't like it.
Thanks for the input, Huey. I believe I looked into my display at one point, and determined that it is NOT HDCP-compliant via DVI. Does that change your Phillips recommendation?

HDMI always has HDCP, so that is a problem. There a software patcher for Oppo firmware that is said to disable HDCP on the 970 and 981.

The older 971 is a DVI player without HDCP, which would work for you.
