I have a Sony AVR that upconverts to 1080p. If I connect a source to my AVR via HDMI, lets say a cable STB with all resolutions enabled, and I have my AVR set to output 1080p always, shouldn't my TV never search for the source's resolution and stay locked on 1080p?

Yes...in theory.

But....be forewarned that many (most?) Sony AVR's only 'up-convert' analog sources, and digital HDMI signals are passed untouched at their native resolution. It's a dirty little secret, particularly with many receivers that use the Farojuda DCDi solution, as most Sony AVR's do.

You can probably get a better take for your specific AVR in the receiver sub forum.

Cheers!

Yup.

Marketing wins over engineering.

Don't worry, however, the scaler in your HDTV is probably significantly better anyway.
