Hi,


I recently got the Take Classic and found that the amp volume has to be high up to get some decent sound output. The old speaker setup i had which was big old Jvc fronts didn't need the volume so high. Is my amp too small for the Energy Take Classic or i have something not set up right? The overall sound quality is not that impressive either.. I find the highs are not really sounding good,not sure if i am expecting too much from these speakers after reading so many good reviews... Or i need a good amp before judging


Any thoughts?

Unless you have the volume of the amp maxed out it is powerful enough, although most current model AVRs use logarithmic volume scales which require the volume to be raised to at least 40-50% for normal volume levels. Also it sounds like the Energy speakers are much smaller than your previous JVC speakers, so the audio may not fill the room as well. If the Sony has an Auto EQ program use it to setup your speakers. If still not satisfied, consider a Denon 1612 that uses the Audyssey MultEQ program.

It is my first time having Satellite speakers, seems like it makes a difference in total volume. My question is, is it worth buying a better amp for these speakers? Will i get a big difference in clarity/loudness if i get a more powerful amp?

no... if you want "better clarity", buy "better speakers"... or work on your positioning...

Positioning is pretty good, they are evenly placed in the corners of a 15' x 30' room.. I guess it is a big room for such small speakers.


Anybody else can comment? Is it worth getting another amp?

As lower level tiny speakers they work best in small/med sized rooms which is not the case with your room which is larger. As Chris suggests, buy better quality and larger speakers for better audio.

I was under the impression that I bought one of the best small/satellite speaker system out there. If the reviews i read are right, then there is no such thing as a small good sounding speaker system. If you want good sound, go big and buy the real deal. Too bad i cannot return them now, a little too late. Oh well

Well, i found it hard to believe that the Take Classics arent good speakers... So i went and purchased the Pioneer VSK-1020.. OMG what a difference! I ran the Mcaa setup and it sounds amazing... Room is not too big, these speakers rock..

Glad to hear you listened to your inner voice and you are now a happy camper. I bought my son a Martin Logan MLT-1 set (used) and tried them in my room which is similar size and they sounded darn good for the size, i was very impressed. I will also say that as i have progressed and upgraded, my move from a sony str dg820 to my current denon avr -3311 was a substantial improvemnet i was not expecting. I was more looking for internet streaming and OSD since setup using the front panel is hard at my age . I am not surprised the move from the budget sony to a more upscale reciever helped. That is what upgrading is about or we would all be using $200 recievers.

I still think the Takes are too small for that size room, but if you're happy its all that matters.


I used to own Take speakers and replaced them with bookshelf speakers, it was a huge upgrade.

I never expected the classics to blow me away with volume, they are very small speakers. Somehow, i felt that they can deliver more. i can tell you that the Sony receiver is rubbish, probably not even worth the $200 i bought it for. Guess lesson learnt that the amp/receiver has to be at least a match or better than the speakers.. I am very satisified with what these classics can deliver. For Sattellite speakers, they sound great.. I'm sure i will end up upgrading later on but my point is that the receiver upgrade was a must and made a significant difference.

Sony entry level receivers rarely get recommend here on AVS. Very poor performers.

Most receivers you can buy for under $200 have marginal capabilities, and that is complicated by the fact that the Take Classic speakers are not real sensitive and need some extra power.


The front two speakers have such tiny drivers that it is a problem; poor efficiency and limited power output.


I suggest that you get a pair of front speakers with drivers that are over 5 inches and you will make a huge improvement, since they be able to go down to 60 Hz and deliver much more sound.


A pair of Boston CS26 Classic speakers would be very good; or Energy C-100.
