I've been researching A/V receivers of late (narrowing it down to Denon and B&K, but open to suggestions) and have seen "upgradable" mentioned as a selling point for many vendors. Much of the product literature states something to the effect that the product has "RS232 port for software upgrades, should they become available." Given this statement, has anyone actually been able to upgrade their receiver with software upgrades? Or is it just vaporware and marketing?

BTW, neither the Denon or the B&K sites have any mention of software upgrades (although you can do a hardware upgrade for your Denon 5800 for a measly $800).

I'm currently looking at the Marantz 7300. One of the reasons is the hope that they may upgrade it in the future. Wont hold my breath though. Having said that, I do remember a seller on an auction site selling what from memory was either a Sony or Marantz receiver that had been upgraded from 5.1 to 6.1 through the 232 connector. So It does happen.
