Is the 1019 worth $500 as an upgrade to my 509s? (I typed five paragraphs and then cleared it cause this is really my question

No, but the vsx-9040 might be. It has a better feature set than the 1019.

I went with the VSX-32, its definitely worth 2X what I paid for the 509S, 10 years ago. I was a little worried it wouldn't be twice as good when I bought it, I felt way better as soon as I powered it up and applied sound.
