I currently have a Denon 3805. I have been happy with the audio quality of it, but after moving into a new house and upgrading some other stuff, I have two issues with it:

-It doesn't do HDMI. I'm running analog cable out of my new Blu-Ray player now so I can get TruHD, but I have lip-sync issues since I can't delay the audio on the analog ins to match the TV's 100ms video processing delay.

-I need more headroom. I have a open floor plan and a cathedral ceiling, so I have a lot of air to push before it starts to get 'loud.' Occasionally when I am watching TV at about -5 to -10 dB (with 0 dB calibrated to 75 dB pink noise), the receiver detects that the audio output is clipping and trips the recovery mechanism to shut the speakers off.

What are my options as far as AV receivers go? I'd like to keep it around $1200-$1500. I'd like something with audio quality par with the 3805, more headroom, and HDMI & lip sync features.

I figure the 3808 is going to have the same output section as the 3805, so it probably doesn't make sense to go with the 3808.

EDIT: I probably should mention that I am driving a pair of Paradigm Studios (old version of what is now pretty much a Studio 60) and a Paradigm Millenia 60 in the center.

Maybe you should consider getting a lightly lesser receiver (like say the 2310) and add an amp. The 38xx series receivers have pretty decent amps in them so if your current one isn't cutting it you would need to step up pretty big. A 200wpc amp might be your best bet. If you are running 5 channels, maybe the Emotiva XPA-5 would do the trick http://emotiva.com/xpa5.shtm .

I don't think you get pre-outs until you step up to the 3310, which is absolutely ridiculous IMO.

DOH! You are right, I completely forgot about that. I agree, Yamaha has preouts on the RX-V665 and up, Denon should do the same.

You might look at the Pioneer Elite SC-07? 6ave.com is doing a name your price sale and I have heard you can get them as low as $849-900 right now. 140wpc, supposedly good for larger rooms, and it does have pre-outs if you need them...

I have the SC-05 and love it.

if you like Denon, go with a 2809/989 model from last year (which is a much cheaper way to get full HDMI audio support and pre-outs, plus you get MultEQ XT + Dynamic EQ + Dynamic Volume) and add a beefy amp like the XPA-5 ....

Great option that I second. The XPA-5 is a beast and the 2809 has a ton of bells and whistles. MultiEQ XT is huge in room correction.
