Upgrade to HDTV

I am considering switching to HDTV in two steps. To ease the financial hit

I am thinking of getting either a DISH 811 or a DISH 921, and then getting

the HDTV monitor separately. If I do this is two steps, say a month or two

apart, would I be better getting the HDTV monitor first and then getting the

receiver later, or am I better off getting the receiver first and then

getting the tuner?

I would say get the moniter first and use it to view DVDs in 16:9 mode :)

I took a different approach. First, I bought a small HDTV that had a built-in ATSC tuner for my bedroom. Then I figured out what channels I could get OTA with an indoor antenna. Well, I was so impressed with the picture quality, I decided to get digital cable and then a new plasma screen HDTV with built-in ATSC tuner for my TV room.

I'm not saying you should go for the plasma, but I would suggest getting a small HDTV with ATSC tuner (Samsung has one). If you like it, start saving up/budgeting, etc for satellite, cable, bigger TV etc.

There is a lot of great TV programming in HD avaiable OTA. No sports, though. You'll need satellite or cable for that.

YMMV.

Huh? You mean the Superbowl, the NFL season, the Masters, baseball playoffs, even some NASCAR events were or are not in HD? Yes, the NBA or MLB packages show up on the cable networks, but still FOX, CBS & ABC offer a fair amount of HD sports events.
yeah - im not sure where jim is located - but here in chicago - all of the home games on wgn are broadcast in hd - which is almost all of them - and thats from all of the major sports teams...

and then theres football - which is spectacular in hd - and all of it can be achieved ota...
