Upgrading 5.1 to 7.1 Need HELP

725 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  cel4145
Goodmoring guys I am in the process of moving to a new house which will have a much bigger living room comparing to the one I live in now.Due to this I am looking to upgrading my fronts and my center channel.

New living room dimensions are 35X30 with 10 Ft Ceiling. The living room area is open.

Current System:

Onkyo TX-NR3008

(5)Anthony Gallo Acoustics A'Diva Ti loudspeaker

SVS SB12 NSD

My main focus is upgrading the fronts and center channel while also using the leftover Gallo's as front highs and rears.

Budget:$2000-2500

Thank You and I would appropriate your advices on the type of speakers i should consider.

Given the size of that room at over 10,000 cubic feet your subwoofer is more than likely the weakest link in the chain. I'd set aside close to $2000 of that budget to pick up a pair of SVS PB-2000's (or a couple additional SB-12s for a total of 3) before upgrading anything else in your system.

I mean that room isn't big it's HUGE and I promise you that unless you have the SB12 right at the MLP it won't do any justice with bass in that room. Why, well not because its not a good sub cuz it is, but because its not the right tool for the job. For one in a room that big you definitely want to go with large ported subs. You will probably want/need 2 to 4 subs in that room. I wouldn't even worry about speakers yet, use your whole budget on subs. Look at duals of each of these: SVS PB2000, PSA XV15, HSU VTF-15H, or Rythmik FV15HP.
Thank You guys for the reply.

Well I understand the sub I currently own is not enough for this particular room however due to this being a living room I am trying to avoid cluttering it up with couple of sub woofers and huge tower speakers therefore I am looking for a more elegant alternative .But at the same time I would like to improve the sound in this particular situation.
So, does that mean that only speakers that are wall mounted are in the mix? Are you just looking for the front three? More info, if you please. What about the current speakers are you dissatisfied with?
Well the setup i have will be mounted on the wall i will use the (2)Gallos as Front High and (2)Gallos as rears which are going to be mounted in the ceiling. But now i wanted to add new front speakers and center to improve the sound. The fronts i would put on the floor and center below the tv.I am very happy with the speakers however I feel when put in a bigger room they will not satisfy me.The living room is a big open area and i don't know if they would handle it.
Wall mount speakers in a big room is potentially problematic because of their size (typically very shallow cabinets). If you like the sound of the A'Diva Ti's have you considered the Gallo Strada's? As far as wall mounts go they can output a lot of sound, and Gallo has a generous return policy.

As others have mentioned... you might consider at least one more sub since you're planning on wall mount speakers and they will require more of the sub. It's good to remember that dual/multiple subs is not for "more" bass, but for a more even distribution of bass sound throughout the room (esp. in the crossover which is most pertinent to your situation).

One of the less obtrusive bookshelf speakers I can think of that can handle your space size is the Ascend CMT-340 (they have two bass drivers). I know someone who wall mounted them and it looks good. (Ascend has port bungs for the 340's and can advise you on wall mounting them .)

I can't think of any wall-mount (or satellite or in-wall) speakers that could easily fill a room that size ... There are a couple of on-wall Triads but as I recall they're kind of pricey. I'll have to mull it over ...

I would wait until you are completely moved in and have everything hooked up. That's a large room and my first concern over speakers would be room acoustics. You may be better off putting money in to room treatment than speakers but you won't be able to assess that until you are moved in. Filling the room with volume is one thing, having a good room to listen in is another.

Unfortunately, the laws of physics impede achieving those two objectives in that size room, especially when it comes to bass.

I'm sort of with East Glenn here in that you should wait, hook up your existing system, and see what is lacking.

They don't have to be clutter. I personally hate the idea of big, ugly square boxes, so this is the direction I'm probably going with the house I'm designing.
Would a second sub same model as i currently have make a difference.I will be only allowed to add one extra sub to this setup.Or i was looking at MartinLogan Dynamo 1000 which is also wireless which is a great thing because i wont have to setup extra cables.I was thinking of putting my sub near the fronts and lets say the extra one in the back maybe behind the couch area.
Heck yeah a 2nd SB12NSD would make a big difference especially if you put the 2nd one right behind or beside the couch. As already stated for a room that big you should have ported subs, but I would not mix and match different subs and especially not sealed and ported. 2 PB2000's would probably be my choice since you like SVS. Also if you need wireless there are kits to make any sub wireless, but I don't have any experience with them so I'll let someone else comment on that.
Sounds like a mess. One thing for sure is you should sell the sb12 and get 2 ported subs.

The Ascend 340s might be a good idea. Sell the speakers you have and buy 7 340s and wall mount all of them. If you need to save a few dollars you can use the 170s for front heights instead of 340s. Assuming you will be listening to music as well as HT that should cover you pretty well.

Those Gallos just dont have any place in a room that size and youll get more for them if you sell them as a complete set. Its not good to use different kinds of speakers anyway so youre options wont be limited by the Gallos.

I wouldn't count on it unless you can place the sub a few feet away. Otherwise, you need to go big and ported for a 10,000 cubic ft room.

How long ago did you buy your SB12? There's a one year trade-up policy.

Also, you had mentioned concern about having big black boxes in your room. Maybe you would like big black cylinders better?
