Well, Fantasy Football is over and my pocket is now deeper....and I am already in the middle of "upgrading" my movie room. At the moment I have a Sony VPL-HW30ES with a 133" Cinema Vision 16:9 Da-Lite screen (18' Throw distance). I am upgrading to a Falcon Screens 132" Acoustically Transparent 16:9 screen.

With my old Da-Lite screen, I noticed that after about 800 hours I had to turn my Sony onto "High" Lamp mode to maintain what I like for brightness using "Cinema" picture preset (with the Iris all the way open) in a completely light controlled room. So obviously brightness is an issue I have to keep in mind. Also, I tried 3D for a few months but never used it, so 3D IS NOT a factor. At all. Zero. 4k for future proof is a major consideration. 90% of the use is Blu-ray movies, with 10% use for HD sports. Video Game lag is of little concern.

With the price I could get for my HW30ES and the profit I have in my pocket, I could justify spending around $6000 for a new projector. I noticed that a brand new JVC DLA-RS66 can be had for just under $7000 on eBay....which would be an ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM consideration for price. But before jumping on a deal like that just because it is the "best" JVC model from last year, I want to get as many opinions, impressions, and subjective criticism for ditching my HW30ES so quickly (it's only 2 years old).

- Are there other models nearly as good as the RS66 for less?

- Is there anything worth considering other than the HW55ES (since the 500ES is out of my range)?

- Is the Sony HW50ES even worth considering or would it be a minimal upgrade over the HW30ES?

- How big of a difference is the brightness (when using a somewhat "calibrated" preset like Movie or Reference or THX) between comparable Sony and JVC models?

- Is there another brand I am completely forgetting that can compete for 2D picture quality?

Thanks!

P.S. - I used to do all my reference viewing on a Pioneer Kuro Elite before going projection......so I LOVE deep blacks. Love them.

For that size screen, I would want a projector with good lumen output. If you would like to discuss, give us a call.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that excludes the JVC but now includes the Epson if light output should be a deciding factor, right? .....do the Epson's (5030/6030) compete nearly as well for 2D image as the Sony's and JVC's?

Well, been looking hard at Epson and it seems they have a really decent product in the 5030 but I noticed the major "flaw" is SDE. Going from LCoS to LCD it seems like I may notice this effect, especially on such a big screen and my first row of seats only being 12' away?

Is the Sony HW55ES worth considering or is it minimal improvement over the 30ES?

Just don't know what to do

A wise course of conduct for a salesman but it still makes you a hypocrite. Sort of like many politicians. Saying one thing in public and another in private. Just remember big brother may be monitoring your calls.

If I had made a public statement and then turned around and made a different statement in private, then yes that would meet the definition of hypocrite. Since i made no such declaration, I do not meet the definition of hypocrite.

Also I guess it is not a matter of talking bad about any one of them. It is more of which one would be best for his particular situation.

we are going to have to send you back to NY.

Have a Happy New Year Mark.

Being a rep of all three, I can't talk bad about any of them, but if you would like my opinion on best for your situation, then call me.

Will do. Just have to wait to get off of work.

Any input on current users in the meantime?

Just trying to keep you awake Mike. All in good fun. But seriously, you are now sounding like a politician or a lawyer or one who is both.
True. All projectors are simply tools to accomplish a job without any reaching perfection. Some are good for digging ditches (a job that needs to be done and which can be done by a shovel if the construction budget doesn't allow for a machine to do it) and others for more lofty jobs. Once again I am just messing with you here. No criticism of the fine job you do at all.

Talked to Mike and am leaning VERY heavily towards the HW55ES. However, I just came across a factory refurbished JVC X95 for a killer price. Is this worth a consideration? How does the X95 compare to the HW55ES in terms of light output?

Thanks!

Projecting from 18ft. Away onto a screen with little or no gain?

I would still take the Sony.

Yea, after reading a few reviews and seeing the light output of the X95, I figured the HW55ES would still be the best choice for my situation.

Just thought I'd ask!

What did you end up going with? The HW55ES? If so, did you notice any improvements?

I checked out a Sony VPL-HW55ES on a 16:9  100 in Diagonal screen research grey screen, and all i can say OMG! what a picture in a light controlled room. What caught my attention other than stunning picture was i did not see any motion judder and fast moving scenes looked terrific.

It's one of the best projectors out right now IMO. And we actually have some in stock ( after Sony being backordered for what seemed forever ) !!

Jeff Meier (UMR) recommended the 55ES to me before calibrating my VW60 recently. My Black Pearl looks great after his work recently, but the the 55ES will be the first one I look at after this lamp goes dim.

Can you describe what Sony has done in their current projectors to address the panel degradation issue of past?
