Upgrading vs Buying a Second Subwoofer

1071 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  UnexplainedBacon
I currently have this system:

Pioneer VSX-92TXH

Polk RTi10 (front with phantom center)

Polk Monitor 50 Series II (surround)

Polk PSW125 (subwoofer)

Would it be preferable to buy a better subwoofer or a second identical/similar subwoofer?

Although if your current sub was one of the better ones, I'd say a second sub is worth it.

I just borrowed my boss' sub while he's putting drain tile in his basement, so I could experiment with a second sub. It's a fairly cheap one with lots of output but no extension below 35hz. I put it in the back of my theater, and it filled in a 40hz to 60hz null that has plagued me for a couple years! I was missing out on the chest-thumping impacts, the visceral feel. After using REW to measure and tweak, I played favorite movie bass scenes and had a big grin for a few hours.
In your case I recommend an upgrade. That sub costs $350 and you can get at least Bic PL200 for a cheaper price and better performace than PSW125 which is only 150W RMS. I have a Cerwin Vega 150W and a PL200 which use a 250W Bash amp and is a lot lot better.

For $400 you can get few nice subs; for $500 there is a wide range of vey nice subs from Epik, eD and HSU.
Definitely upgrade to one of the many good ID choices.

BTW, I can explain bacon...its tasty

Thank you for your responses

I live in Canada and it appears that shipping/etc would be expensive for a subwoofer from an ID company. My budget would be 300-600 but I mainly asked about a second PSW125 because I may be able to get another one on sale for roughly $250.
