As a newbie to this site, I would like to know what type and or brand of ups the members are using . I just bought the Samsung HLP5085 , and after reading this site for the last hour I think a ups backup unit in addition to my monster HTS700 power center would be a wise investment. Thanks in advance for any help or advise on this subject.

Hi Big,

I've been using a SmartUPS 1500 from APC for about two years now. Works great, and has saved the bulb of my Sony GWII several times from power failures. Same UPS also runs an HTPC, receiver, HD cable box, and VCR.

if you are going to get a ups unit for your audio/video system. make sure that it is rated for a full 15 amps of current...... (or 20 amps if you are on a 20 amp circuit)....

to translate that into watts..... 15 amps is app 1800 watts and 20 amps is app 2400 watts....

additionally.... some units have been known to hum or buzz when in operation..... i would suggest that you turn it on in the store and/or be sure to buy from someplace that has a good return policy.....

cheers!

In my experience, APC is the way to go.

I have a whole pile of 'em. Buzz is quiet next to the whir of the fan in my projector, but the whole mess will be getting enclosed in a sound-box soon enough.

I have used other manufacturers, but they haven't lasted as long and I even had one catch fire (the equipment kept running just fine).

Thanks for all the input, I purchased a APC unit in between my first post and the first reply. Now the question is did I buy a large enough unit. From the little I know about ups backup the equation is 1.67x the total watts of the devise. Since I'm only going to plug the samsung hlp5085 into the ups and as far as I can figure the sammy only takes 200w, I figure I'm about 30 volt-amps short of ideal. I've got the APC BE500ES rated at 500 joule and 300 watts. Is this a large enough shortage to give me problems down the road.

It will protect you from brown-outs well enough - it may not support any extended use without power, but I think that's not what your goal is here.

You might want to check with APC to verify that the wiring won't have any trouble - that was one theory on why I had one start on fire (APC suggested their competition skimps on components while they tend to overbuild... not sure, but hey.) I suspect you're just fine though.

Thanks cjd

I would flip out if a power supply caught on fire. Anyway thanks for the info and the reassurance. I'm just a little paranoid about this new sammy purchase and want to keep the pile of money safe and running.

Funny you should mention that you had one catch fire. APC had a huge recall a couple years ago for one of their units catching fire.
