I have a 34" widescreen CRT direct view HDTV (RCA D34w20) with 910 lines, one DVI-D (HDCP) input and two HD component inputs. I have heard that upscaling does not have much effect on CRT HDTVs. I'd like to know if a DVD player with Faroudja FIL23xx chipset and DVI output can truly output 720p or 1080i (even 1080p possible?) to my HDTV monitor via the DVI connection? Thanks.

This question is probably better asked in the DVD forums, where DVI based DVD players are being discussed.

I believe they can only output 480p, 720p, or 1080i via DVI. By using these players, you're bypassing the scaler in the TV and using the one in the DVD player; doing so should improve the pic quality. Check out the review on the Denon 5900 on the Secrets website.

I don't have a DVI based DVD player, but I am using a video processor to my CRT RPTV. I do see an improvement when letting the processor handle all the duties and just use the RPTV strictly as a monitor.

Hope this helps.
