Im going to be purchasing a 26-30 inch widescreen CRT set in the next week or so. Considering a native resolution of 1080i of the set, is it worth it to buy a DVD player that upconverts to 1080i and 720p (assuming I get a set that does 720p) . should I just go with a good old 480p progressive DVD player

On such a small screen, I doubt you would notice any improvement. I'd recommend going with a progressive player with a good de-interlacer (Faroudja or Silicon Image).
