I've done some experimenting with FFDshow and had mixed results. I think that my display 42" HD plasma is boarderline for seeing any benifit that FFDshow can provide over using a packaged product such as TheaterTek 2.1.
I did see a noticable improvement when following the "Using Avisynth LimitedSharpen pre-processing with ffdshow for DVD playback!" thread (link below). However it was too much for my 3.2G P4 computer. The thread discussess ways to reduce the load on the computer but then the results seemed to disappear for me.
I think the way to go, for me, would be to pre-process the DVD using the best filters available. There was a thread about this, also created by Socio, which escapes me at the moment. It may have been mentioned in the above thread.
Like PAP said, lots of reading, but also fun to try.
