My parents just got a Hitatchi 46F510....so far so good....I want to get them an OTA hd receiver...I have seen D* RCA DTC100 on ebay for about 25 to 35 bucks.....I know its not latest or greatest and no DVI but I just want them to get the feel for HD...then maybe upgrade a bit later...any the question is can I use just the OTA tuner of the box with out a actvated card/account?? Thanks......

Yes. This is one of the STBs that althought it works with DirecTV, it can be hooked up without it.

SMK
The DTC100 is 1st-generation and has a fairly weak OTA tuner. If your local stations are not at full power or far away, you may have reception problems. YMMV
Is that true with the Samsung 360? Can I stop my D* service and just use it as a OTA tuner?
All DirecTV HD boxes will work for OTA without D* service. Some (like the Samsung TS160), however, do require that an access card be inserted, or you can't access the setup menus.

Also, the dtc100 doesnt have component out either, so you'll be forced to use the RGB output.

I could be wrong, but I dont think your parents hitatchi has that input.
I'll trade for my philips TV it has a RGB input but no DVI. DOH! Actually you can get cables that are RGB/componenet. I used one to hook my dvd up to my TV through the RGB 15pin.

True, but for the price of the dtc100 plus the rgb to component cable, he could just buy one of the better boxes
jcatalfamo,

Very good point. But the purchase of a new box usually requires signing an agreement to activate it with D* within 30 days or so. The OP wants the box for OTA only.

Well, I was actually referring to the OP buying a better "used" box off of ebay, one that atleast has component outs.

I just dont think the DTC-100 is a smart buy at any price unless you have a display with an RGB input. There are too many other used alternatives around the $100 mark.
The cables are not the expensive. I think I got mine off ebay for 15 bucks.

The cheapest I could find on ebay ( just looked) was $29 plus $15 shipping.

and the cheapest the dtc-100 auction actually closes at is about $100 plus $15 for shipping.

So, youre still shelling out $160 bucks to get this box functional.

/shrug all opinion, but I'd go for either the toshiba dst-3000 or e86, or anything else with component out for about the same price off ebay.

As a side note... as of the time of this posting, I just checked ebay and there were 3 DTC-100 boxes with auction ending times of less than 8 hours and they were all over $100. So the OP will have a hard time finding on for the $30ish range he quoted.
