A friend of mine had asked me if you can use the PVR portion of an UltimateTV (or even Tivo for that matter) satellite receiver w/o subscribing to UTV (or Tivo)? I'm guessing what he's after is being able to record shows, but not wanting the extra bells and whistles. Is this possible?

The closest thing to this is a web site I found that modifies Tivo so that it can be a generic video recorder with no Tivo service ( http://www.digitalrecorder.tv/tivo.htm ) He could probably run the out from his receiver to the in on the recorder and record programs. It would reduce the capability dramatically and be quite expensive, but should work (Conjecture on my part). All it would be is an expensive VCR with HD instead of tapes. Call the company at the web link and see if it will do that for you.

A standard stand alone TiVo will let you use it as a Digital VCR (i.e. no recording from the guide, no season passes, etc.) without paying for the service. If he has DirecTv, he is much better off with an integrated box like an UltimateTV or DirecTiVo even with the fee. Better quality, and dual tuners make it an easy choice. One should be able to buy a DirecTiVo (as a new subscriber) with the lifetime subscription for the same price as a stand alone Series II TiVo with no TiVo service. Tell him to use it for a week (during the trial period) and I will bet he will choose to subscribe (unless he is Arjay).

Check out www.DealDatabase.com for everything you wanted to know about hacking the DirecTivo. As for the UTV, you cannot subscribe to DirecTV without also subscribing to the UTV service. The good news is that once you've subscribed to both, additional UTVs will only cost you an extra $4.99/month for as many as you want to activate. Hacking of UTV service is discussed in DSS forums and is not permitted here.

let me get this straight.. I pay for the directv service, which includes the program guide..now, they want me to pay an extra $10 a month to make

the box record..geez, and they wonder why Ultimate tv is failing..

no thanks, I'll keep my serviceless Tivo's and nag screens..

No wonder Charlie Ergen is having such success with the Dishplayer!
