Now that AV receivers have good quality DACs, which one do people use?

If you don't use the CD player's DAC, why pay extra for the high-end versions of the equipment? For instance, Sony has a few 300-CD changers with a street price of about $300, but their ES versions are twice that. Other than a few extra features, does the mechanical build quality justify the extra price if you aren't going to use the audio portion of the player?

FYI, I have purchased a Denon 3300 and was considering a new CD changer...

Scott,I use the reciever's because mine does not have an analog bypass. If you don't have an analog bypass and you use the player's DAC,then the reciever converts it to digital again and back yet again. The music loses something. I have a really good CD player, just in case the transport makes a difference, a Pioneer PD-65.When I had my cheap Sony 5 disc'er hooked up it sounded pretty good too.It has moved to the playroom where it dumps into a Denon DA converter. It's own DA sux! The better ES player will last longer,if nothing else.I bet it will sound a little better too.The ES player will have more versatility, the future is......

I got a preamp that lacks analog passthru.

I prefer a single DAC for all my digital sources so that the sound is consistent.

You'll have to test it out on your CD/DVD/LD players etc. to see which has the good DAC.

Except for extremely high-end CD players or professional standalone DAC's, most surround receivers and preamps have very good DAC's, in many cases much better than most cheap Japanese CD/DVD players.

SCOTTS,

I agree with you on that one. I currently own a SONY 200 CD changer which contains the basic control features I was looking for (CD Text, daisy chaining and digital output). I connect the digital output to my Camelot DAC and it sounds wonderful. I have had this changer for about 2 years now and have not had any problems.

One note, I have read material about induced jitter by the transport mechanisms and being a digital output I am very skeptical about the claims of these jitter reducing devices. Have you experienced anything of this sort?
