I recently spent most of my home theater budget on an Onkyo NR-1009 receiver with the intention of gradually building from here.  I have about $300 left for a pair of left-right speakers to "hold me over" until I save up more money for a better pair.

I have read great things about the Pioneer SP-FS52 speakers and I've also read good things about the Ascend CMT-340.  I could buy the Pioneer SP-FS52's online for roughly $200 but a local guy also has his pair of Ascend CMT-340's for sale for $200 as well.  I'm embarrassed at my lack of knowledge about audio, but I decided to ask this group humbly for their recommendations in my situation.  I would really like to make an entry into the lower realms of audiophile listening and have been impressed for years with the knowledge of many in this forum.

(Coming from an Onkyo HTIB surround package, I'm sure that any choice I make will sound better--both my taste in music (hard) and my hearing (not trained) will be satisfied with any upgrade.   I don't have much opportunity locally to demo speakers so I've been doing online research and decided to pipe up in order to hear this trusted group's opinion.)

If the Ascends are in good condition and you are able to listen to them first, I would definitely go that route. They are a better speaker than the Pioneers, and that seems like a fair price.

Talk about over spending on a receiver. Generally you spend 25%-33% of budget on receiver and then the rest on speakers.

If the Ascends are in good working order I would go with them.

Hopefully you will have 500-600 to spend on a subwoofer soon

Thank you both very much for your time answering my question!  I'll wait a little longer to hear anyone else's opinion, and then I'll go with the Ascend option if no one else replies.

Great question about whether they're the 340 or 340SE's!  They're the 340SE's.  I haven't asked how old they are, but I will though.

Oh, although I know very little about audio, I'm big on video.  I went with the Onkyo NR-1009 because I currently have a 1080p projector that I've owned since 2010 for my man room.  Although I've always been far more focused on image quality over sound quality, I really want to learn and increase my appreciation for audio.  I'm the kind of guy who's historically been happy with my two Buttkickers ( http://www.thebuttkicker.com/lfe-kit ) and ONKYO speakers but I want to become more sophisticated.

Oh no! I hope you have deep pockets, or not susceptible to upgrade-itis!! You got it from both ends!

Thank you, sir!  Compared to so many in the world, I'm really rich.  I'm hoping I don't get caught by this audiophile bug too bad, because you're right--the upgrades become tempting.  Perhaps I'll even pony up for some of your HV-1's as surrounds as my next upgrade stop-gap. :)

Hard to go wrong with used CMT-340 SE's
(So long as they're in good shape of course.)

As the owner of the Pioneers I can say that, without even auditioning them, just based one everything I have read, I would trade the Pioneers for the Ascends

The ascend will sound better but definitely they only look better with their matching TP-24 pedestal stands and that will add another $218.
