You may want to save up a little more until you can get into the $2500 price range and even that will not get you much!

You may find someone with a vga lcd projector that may work for you in that price range!!!

Keep an eye on ebay you may win a low bid!

That would get you an NEC LT81/Proxima DS1/Plus UP800, all good SVGA machines (and all cones of each other). You will need a DVDO iScan ($300 used) with any of these.

You might get an NEC LT84/Plus U2870, which are later generation and a bit brighter, but not necessarily better.

Bob,

Do the Davis projectors still have the problem of showing iScanned images in the center of 640 x 480 window, or was there a scaler fix that I seem to remember hearing about?

Sorry, Steve, I don't know. By the time I first got

my Davis (Viewsonic) I was using HTPC and had sold

my DVDO (1st edition). Afraid I didn't keep up with DVDO developments after that.

If you want it only for DVD (not HDTV) and you

look hard you can find a good used Davis DL450 (or one of it's six clones) for the amount you're wanting to pay.

It still gives the overall best picture I've seen

at that price level. But with any SVGA projector

you don't want to get very big on the screen size

unless you don't mind seeing the screen door.

When I had my Davis I could tolerate it up to

a 7' wide screen sitting at 14'. But to me

it did not have enough light output to go much

bigger with the image. Also an HTPC is requisite

to using these projectors. But the good news is

that it's now a dirt cheap proposition to put together

a fine HTPC. I just built an AMD 1.2 Ghz HTPC with

a 32 Mb Radeon card for about $500 buying stuff mainly off

eBay.
