With over 100 posts since I started reading this forum in June, I'd like to think that no one will doubt that I highly value my time reading and enjoying the posts here.

That said, some of you may have noticed that all of posts include, in my signature, a reference to the newsgroup alt.video.ptv.replaytv. Before I found this forum, I searched for a newsgroup related to ReplayTV, but could only find the Tivo forum. I posted there occasionally and found that other Replay users would post there as well. For lack of another resource, I went through the motions to create the replaytv newsgroup.

Acceptance has been slow. For starters, anyone reading posts here already have an invaluable location to discuss the unit with the added bonus that Mike, Eric, Logan, Doug (even Just) et. al. read the posts regularly. Secondly, despite my best efforts, I can't seem to get deja to carry the group (since when did they ever reject a group?).

I think a newsgroup provides an important component for the discussion community. For those users with an aversion to web based forums, it provides an Internet standard that virtually all have access to. For those users who value anonymity very greatly (admittedly some so they can be rude), Usenet, in the alt. heirarchy, provides a level of anonymity. Finally, if I can ever get deja to carry it, it provides the well known search presence that many first seek when searching for discussion groups.

So why am I saying all of this? I'd like the group to be included in news servers across the country so the discussion will continue (note that it will also serve to bring new users here when, as we often do, we refer to information provided in the group as a link in a message). If you know how your news reader works, see if you can add the group. If not, will you please send an email to your news administrator to request its inclusion? I will send boosters of the newsgroup creation message tomorrow and the following Friday, in case your administrator needs it.

Increased communication can only help.

Did you create a charter and send a proposal to alt.config? Were there negative comments in alt.config? Did the control message show up in the group or in alt.config? I haven't seen the group at AirNews and they're VERY picky about that sort of thing.

Maybe Deja quit picking up newly created groups now that their entire archive is on the auction block. They used to be really good about grabbing a new group even if it wasn't 'legitimate'. They picked up one that I created even though there was a typo in the proposal, which invalidated the whole thing.

Oh, yes, I created a charter and discussed the group for a week on alt.config. Thankfully, the people in that group were mostly supportive and inquisitive (I had been prepared for open hostility).

The only negative complaints I received were due to miscounts of Replay being mentioned in other newsgroups. Every time one appeared, I posted a link showing them where to verify correct numbers. In the last day or two, I had nothing but wishes of good luck and advice on posting the group.

When I sent out the control message, I cross posted to two groups: alt.config and alt.video.ptv.tivo. The boosters have included alt.video.ptv.replaytv, though I recognize the irony in sending a message to create a group by way of a message to that group.

While I tend to use Outlook Express for my news reading (very simple interface), I used Gravity (even purchased a full license) to submit the control message.

The bottom line for me is still that user requests will drive its inclusion. This matches the advice I was given in alt.config as well.

My ISP carried it until about a week ago. Now it is gone...

Cheers
