I'm hoping to setup my whole house audio with the following.

1) 2 sonos ZP-90 players. (I figure I can expand to more units later if necessary)

2) A 12 channel amp (HTD?, speakercraft?)

3) Control all of the above with apple iphone or itouch.

4) I'd like 6 zones

What I can't figure out is if it's possible to setup and control distinct zones with this type of a setup. If I'm in the kitchen and want to play music how would the amp know which of the 6 zones to direct the juice to? I'm very new at this so sorry if this is a dumb question!

I am currently designing a similar system, 12 channel - 6 zone amp with 6 ZP-90s. Each ZP-90 will be connected to one of the zone inputs on the amp. Music, volume and zone selection will be made via iPhone, iPod Touch, Sonos Controller or computer, depending on location in the house.

Not a dumb question.

You will need nothing on your walls to control the volume or anything else -- you will control the system wirelessly!

I use a 12 channel NAD amp and I highly recommend it. They also make a 6 channel version.

The amp doesn't need to know which zone to send the music. You will connect your zone players (ZP-90's) to the amp and the zone players will only play through the amp when you tell them to when controlling the system wirelessly.

You control the zone player wirelessly, the zone player outputs to the specific channels on your amp, the amp outputs to the speakers connected to those channels.

To control the system, you will use an i-phone, i-touch, hand held Sonos controller (check out the new one), or simply install the controller software on your computer and control the system from your desktop.

I use a combination of all of these.

When you want music, you access your controller, pick a zone (you can play different music in each zone or connect two or more zones and play the same music at the same time), pick the music you want to play, and you will have the music you've chosen in the zone or zones you desire. Then, you control the volume from the same controller, which gives the ability to set the volume individually for each zone. If you've linked two or more zones, you can control the volume of the individual zones and then you can raise or lower the volume of the linked zones together.
