Using the 500w D-ILA replacement bulb?

1636 Views 26 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Mark Petersen
Please sign in if you are currently using the 500w D-ILA replacement bulb and what projector you are using it in. I know there are a number of people using it in G10's, G11s, G15s and Dukanes/panasonics etc.

I have been VERY happy. Mostly putting my spare unit in my G1000 when I want higher light output for parties, Superbowl, football games, etc. but now my spare has 200 hours so I bought another one Monday. Apple cup this weekend ya know. I have three active bulbs now with varying milage(1 420w, 2 500w).

Please let us know what projector and what you think of your 500w bulb.

Will a 500W bulb work in a G20? Anyone know the wattage of the OEM bulb in the G20?
I think it actually IS the G20 bulb. Even though JVC says the G20 bulb is 550w? or something.

yes, I'm sure it works. Actually I didn't even check the part number on the bulb Ralph sent me. It may be rated at 550w. I slapped it in and it works great on the G10. It only runs at whatever your power setting is at anyway.
Have G11 calibrated by Richard Martin and on my 2ed lamp that has 750 hours on it. Would like to replace with the 500w option. Can I send my 1st lamp housing and have it replaced for $550? How will this effect calibration? I have Dilard but not the sensor. Will I need to buy the sensor and recalibrate with Dilard?
Yes, but it is extremely easy to change yourself. If you use your head and follow the instructions on the link above. It should not take more than 20 minutes to make the switch.

YES all changes effect calibration. I don't bother recalibrating after bulb changes. My measure of perfection might be less than yours;)

If it is the same price, why not let them do it?
Sorry, but after years and years of watching everyone from pions to trained professionals screw every possible thing under the sun up. I myself am in the camp of... I'd rather just do it myself. I find this is true with almost everything. It has saved me countless headaches, dollars and time. so...

I installed the PE 500 watt lamp in a G1000. With no adjustments to the power supply, it ran at about 425 w. Lamp lumen depreciation should be considerably less than the stock lamp due to the lower %-wise output.

Kris
Anyone have a contact # for Ralph/PE? I could not find the old link. I'd appreciate if someone can PM me.

TIA

sparkash, you got mail.

I haven't bought one yet but I'm about to. I've got 900 hrs on my original bulb. Not bad really for 2 1/2 years. Who says the cost of operating a DILA is high? :D

I've talked to Ralph on the phone a couple times now. Very responsive and helpful he is. I've got an extra housing so personally I'd rather him do it than me. I'm sure it's easy but why take a chance?

I'm hoping not to have to recalibrate. I did my original calibrations with Dilard when my bulb was young so I don't see any reason why the new bulb would require another calibration. Shading adjustments perhaps, but Dilard as of yet doesn't do that. I'd rather calibrate for the fun of it than because I had to. :)

But how long will a 500W bulb last in a 425W G1000? I don't want to upgrade too soon or wait for it to explode.
i have about 1200 hrs on my 420 watt bulb in my G-11. I have called around for a replacement, including avscience, and everyone has them on back order. I'm ready to try the 500 watt solution. can someone tellme how to get one and/or how to get a replacedment 420 watt asap...thanks,mike
Does anyone read the threads anymore?

Not really, I'm tired of pocorn and too lazy to do a search. Also, I remember the good stuff was on the Immersive Forum. My recollection is that it should be good to 2K hours.

I'm at about 750 hours, so I though it might be good to do a sanity check.
This topic has been covered many times but...

Nobody knows how long a bulb will last! you could get 50 hours or 5000. Their design perameters often states that you will have half the lumens at the rated bulb life.

In the case of the D-ILA the arc gap gets bigger(less effecient and hotter) the crystal lens becomes less clear(blocking light) and other wear and tear to the point that lumens drop. If the quartz lens is compromised it "can" explode. However, I have never heard of one exploding yet. We know Disney runs there bulbs till they are very dim. Maybe they have had one explode after many hours. If you run enough of them way past their rated hours you may have one do this. Forcing voltage at a bulb that is ineffecient and old for long periods of time could do this.

We HT freaks on the other hand, monitor are projectors like anal hawks. And when it gets past 1000 hours we will likely succumb to all the reports of how bright a new bulb is and just buy one.

I have had and heard many report of UHP bulbs exploding. None for the Xenon of this design.

In the case of the 500w bulb. You should safely get twice the bulb life out of the bulb because you're driving it at significantly less voltage than it's rated for. If light output at that point will still please you is another story.

It might be good to do a poll to see how many hours people have put on their 500W bulbs.
Ran original G11 420 watt bulb ran for nearly 1200 hrs. Bulb was still functional at that "age", but perceptably dim.

Replaced it with 500 watt unit, which now has accumulated about 450 hrs. At first, picture was "WOW". Heart swelled with pride over the personal brilliance in choosing DILA ,etc. Since then, the "wow" factor has ebbed a bit, but picture is still vivid, bright, and richly colored (as viewed on Digital Grey Screen Goo).

Not inclined to change projectors until a big boost in resolution occurs in the same price range as the G11.

I'm running way beyond the prescribed life on my 420w d-ila bulb. Somewhere in the 4000-5000 hour range. Although I'm sure it's relatively dim, I don't really notice when I'm using it (it's what I use for my PC monitor :) ). Regardless, I'm past my comfort point and would like to pop a freshie in.

I've been out of the AVS Forum loop for a bit and thought I'd come back to see if any lamp options have developed since I bought this bulb (my 2nd... the first ran for about 2000 hours)

Maybe it's because it's 4:30 in the morning, but this thread is about the only one I can find on the subject from this year and it's leaving me with a bunch of questions.

Are the 420W bulbs not available while the 500W bulbs are? Are the 500W bulbs cheaper? Any clueing in and/or linking to pertinent threads would be received warmly.

Thanqueue.

This is speculation. I have not measured any significant difference in the wear of the Atlas lamp (so called "500 W" bulb) vs. a stock JVC lamp. They both drop at pretty much the same rate.
