I'm new to AVS but have been hobbying with my UTV for a

couple of years - today I'm "stuck"!


The HD in my RCA 490 died. It was a Western Digital

WD1200BB 120gb I had installed as an upgrade from the

original, 40gb... no probs for months.


Since it lasted only 7 months WD agreed to upgrade me to

their JB (special edition) drive at no charge - kewl!

They're both 7200rpm drives with the same 8mb buffering

but it's supposed to have better bearings and longer MTBF.


Well, I slapped that puppy in there, plugged in the phone

line (to get the drive formatted, etc) and got "internet

terminal needs to be repaired or replaced". Called Thomson

as suggested - NO help.


Since it is a warranty replacement I wonder if it has

already been "PC partitioned/formatted". Any of you UTV

experts have advice? TIA!

From what I recall.. previous post another utv user..


"The bottom line as to whether the WD1200 will work or not is the LBA count. Drives of BOTH types (BB & JB) will work if the LBA count is 234441648. Neither type will work of the LBA count is 234375000. "


If the LBA is good be sure you remove the all jumpers on the drive. Comes with one installed, did on mine..


You could always try your old one if you kept it.. I kept mine ... what was wrong with the 120 that failed?


I checked mine they are wd1200aa and wd1200bb the bb is 7200 speed upgrade.. I can't speak for the jb personally..

I'd swapped the old drive with a bud... today I'm gonna get it back to test.

I had no prob with the BB install and "update" - and according to WD the

JB has 234,441,648 User Sectors Per Drive. Yep, jumpers out.


The UTV would just power itself off every few hours. I pulled the cover and

could hear the HD spin down and back up and if it did so a couple of times

the puppy would just power off. I hope there's not another prob as well!


Does anyone repair them?

Have you verified that all the cables to your HD (and any others) are properly connected....


Sounds like maybe you may have a loose wire someplace....


My Opinion at least...


If the drive does support security (have you downloaded and used Drive Fitness Test to verify?) and you've set the jumpers as described then I'm not sure what else could be wrong.


If the UTV worked before the "upgrade" then it should still work now...


Are you 100% sure your old Hard Drive was the problem?

When you guys say to take out the jumpers, would that not be only if taking out the jumpers configs it for a single master?


I put in a new WD 40 gig and the jumpers needed to stay in for single master configuration.


Why on some WD's do you take them out and on some, both my 40 and 80 gig WD's, do they need to stay in?

Or is the position I have my jumpers in the same as not having jumpers? Is it so you don't lose the jumper's for future use?

You're on the right track... on most WD drives the jumpers are only valid

when they're vertical otherwise it's so you can find 'em next time!

On that note you might want to "buck" the common practice on this forum and try other jumper settings on your WD... Just because it has worked in the past doesn't mean something hasn't changed... OR maybe for some odd reason your Jumper "pin" was left behind in the wrong position... (if you squeeze too hard on some jumpers the metal "jumper" is left benind)


The "repair" error usually means the drive isn't configured right... (no security, setting, or corrupted)


I hope the powering up/down problem you mention is just a UTV power management issue...
